I've been messing with IR's for over a year now and was going nuts trying to get heavy tones... I finally managed to record heavy sounding guitars that I am more or less happy with

Fun song, very 80's thrash inspired, recorded with my Mark Holcomb PRS with alpha omega pickups (not the new SE model) + Rivera Tre + Fortin Grind, Suhr Reactive load and using the Ownhammer heaver hitters IRs, enjoy!

Cool tone! Heavy, crunching, tight... reminds me of some Exodus meets Testament + AJFA era 'tallica.

I would bring the vocals back a bit tho; they make it sound more demo-like, while the rest of the production is quite 'pro'. Perhaps add some more punch in the kick drum too.

Yup, was going for a Testament/Exodus/Justice-Metallica sound for sure! ;)

After listening to it the next day the vocals are way too loud like you said. I guess thats why I always read it is best to take breaks when recording and mixing (especially doing it with headphones) ;)

You pretty much summed it up though, this is my demo of a song idea I have for a band I play drums in. It's hard to explain to the guitarist what I have in my head at practice, and nobody wants to pay for rehearsal time to watch the drummer pick up a guitar to show the guitarist lol. So I make simple demos to get my ideas across (this was a fancy demo in comparison). I also throw in possible vocal melodies with throw away lyrics to get things going quicker with our singer, otherwise the songs with no lyrics or vocal melodies tend to just sit on the back burner.

Thanks all, glad you liked it!

Sounds great!
Which IR did you use? I also have the heavy hitters pack.
Thanks!

I used OwnHammer's -> Heavy Hitters 96000-Hz -> V30 Cab Blends -> 412 DZL+MES\Mics -> then pair any of the IR's with "EDGE" with any of the ones with "FRED" IR's, there is like 6 sets of them in that folder. I used NADir and load one side with an Edge the other with a Fred and use the balance to your preference.

It was fellow Rig-talk user "thefyn" aka Circle of tone on yourtube that mentioned to me about the "Fredman" technique for mic'ing amps in a post for heavy guitars. So I applied that to IR's and holy shit I was finally happy. Hope that helps!

I'm also running a Suhr Reactive Load and the Heavy hitters pack/v30s. I've never tried the blends/fred/edge irs so I will definitely check that out! I've just been grabbing the first 57/v30 and the first 421/v30.

As others have said, vocals should be mixed lower. Otherwise I really like the classic 80s thrash tones. Cool tune!

Thanks! I'll definitely check this out.

I was getting ready to sell my Suhr Reactive Load because of how 'weak' my Ownhammer IRs were sounding.

Good luck man, and let me know if it sounds good.

Me too.. was looking at Kempers and a two notes studio wondering if that would solve my heavy silent recording needs.. I've bought and sold a few heads thinking that might help, bought pedals, you name it. The sad part was I could not find any info on youtube/web about getting a heavy palm muted sound with IR's. I love Pete Thorn videos but sometimes I wish he played metal metal, cause rock/classic rock tones were easy to get, Scott Ian style S.O.D. riffs not so much lol

Anyway let me know if it sounds better to your ears. Like I mentioned I would use NADir, put an edge IR on the left and a fred IR on the right, set it for mono and you can use the balance knob to fine tune, I left mine in the middle for my recording.
