I am thinking of getting some new mics down the road and I haven't the foggiest idea on what is good for live use. If money wasn't an issue and what if it was an issue? So I have 2 questions...

1. What is the best mic for live use? Best value and best period.

2. What is the best one if I were using an iso 4x12 cab? Don't know if it makes a difference with iso's.

Once again, the SM57 comes in great... Doesn't pick up outside stomp when it's in front of the amp.

My 2 cents,
V.

Live mic for guitar amp? several would work. I like the Heil PR30 and 40. Have heard good things about the PR20.

This. I'm torn between my SM57 and PR20 on heavy guitars mic'd from a cab, but on vocals the PR20 beats the SM58 and on acoustic it beats the SM57. Hands down probably the best general use mic out there for the money, and underrated as well.

I could use a better mic for heavy metal guitars than an SM57. It seems to be kind of buzzy.

Sorry I didn't clarify, it is for a high gain amplifiers.

So people like the Heil's and SM57's huh?

The Sennheiser e609 is a cool mic.
It's voiced a lot like a 57, but it seems like it's got a little more presence.

Of course, depending on your tone, that "presence" could either be perfect or come off as a little fizzy...it all depends on context.

Audio-Technica AE 2500

It's a kick drum mic, but many use it for heavy guitar as well. The house engineer at a place I played last year put one in front of my cab. It's really two mics in one, a condenser and a dynamic. James Hetfield uses this one live.

Love the SM57, but it can be picky to place depending on the cab / application. Best value? Still looking. I want to try a Heil PR20 though.

As for best, I've not found a better mic yet than an MD421. The tone is unbelievable, and unlike how the SM57 can get, there's very little fizz!

Much like guitars, amps, and speakers it seems mics are just as subjective.
