When I first got the thing, it needed fixing up. It sounded decent, but it lacked punch and definition. I knew it needed tubes for sure, but I figured I'd get it fixed up while I was at it. So, I took it to Kirk.

He modded the output section to bring the bias up to par. The bias was pegged, and it wasn't hot enough. He changed the bias circuit to give him enough room to bias it properly. He changed out some of the old caps with SoZo caps. He did what he called a "punch mod" to it to give it extra oomph. That increased the gain in the preamp section. He then re-tubed it. The preamp tubes were the original tubes that came with the amp. Red Bear used a special preamp tube wired differently than a normal 12AX7. He rewired the preamp sockets to fit 12AX7s.

I plugged it into my 4x12 when I got back and the thing rips now. I like the presence knob, because it is not like other presence knobs. Turning it back past half way gives you a real dark tone, but having it pegged is not overbearing. When the presence is up all the way, it really sounds like the JCM800 it's modeled after. The Intensity switch is great for an extra boost. It just changes a resistor in the input to increase the gain to the preamp circuit.

Since Kirk did the punch mod, the amp cleans up really well now. You can roll the volume knob back and get a good clean tone, and the amp is really responsive to pick attacks. The harder you pluck, the more gain comes through the amp. It is like night and day. I've had amps re-tubed in the past, and never been so drastically different. The amp really sounds like a dark JCM800. I love it!

Oh, by the way. I have the original Novik preamp tubes that came with the amp. The company went out of business a while back, and I don't know if anyone can find these tubes. I had the sockets rewired to take 12ax7s, so these tubes are of no use to me. If anyone has a Red Bear head, and wants the preamp tubes for it, hit me up. These tubes will only go in a Red Bear amp, and unless you rewire the sockets, the Red Bear will only take these tubes.

Do you have any poictures of yours?

My other guitarist has one, picked it up cheap.

Not at the moment. I gotta try to find my camera.

They aren't really expensive amps to begin with. They were a little over $400 new. They were, however, built really well with cheap Russian military parts. And, they sound great!

Kirk in Kirtland OHIO?
He does magic for low $$$.
I spent around 15 hr's over 3 weekends with him to mod my Marshall SLP.
Great amp wizard.

Great amp wizard.

The very same. He did a great job with my 5150. He just did my buddy's Jet City JCA100H too. The guy does great work!

More gain? Red Bears have pretty ridiculous gain right off the bat! I had one and it was cool but I ended up selling it to grab a Rivera.

My old guitarist has a Rivera Knucklehead, the first gen. Those things were awesome. I almost got it from him dirt cheap when it needed tubes. He wasn't happy with it, and I tried to capitalize. Then he re-tubed it and decided to keep it. Bastard!

Definitely a gain monster, though. If you're in north-east Ohio, definitely keep Kirk in mind for mods, builds, and regular repair!

I got another Basson cab and put my Red Bear through it last night. It sounded mean. Those Basson cabs are big, nasty monsters, and the Red Bear is prefect on it. It sounded good.

I also had a 1st Gen Rivera Knucklehead. Totally awesome clean and dirty sounds. Wish I could find one for a nice price!

Hey, new member to the forum here.

I uncovered one of these things in my basement. A friend had left it down there years ago and I completely forgot about it. Recently dusted it off and had 4 Svetlana Winged C 6L6GC's put in. The original pre-amp tubes are fine, and I know this is an old-ish thread, but I wondered if you still had those that you weren't using? How much would you want for them?
