I hate the AFD and all of Slash's recorded tones

Sorry, gotta disagree.. I'm not a Slash nut hugger in anyway and i find him sloppy today BUT his phrasing and playing on that album was incredible and the tone of the Levi/Caswell #36/#39 is one of the best recorded 80's guitar tones ever to be put to tape. Just my opinion.. to each their own though. On it's own it is thin and bright however. Nobody ever agrees on tone.., I thought the first Lynch Mob CD sounded a little "dark" for my tastes though I love the tunes for example.

Kinda offtopic, Buddy. Affinity for playing guitar is irrelevent here.

I'm not fond of any of Slash's tones either Dave... That tone definitely suited the music of GnR but for anything else, it lacks big time IMO!

I agree as well. I find nothing special about his sound or his style. I think he is a good song writer, but I really don't care for his playing. I caught him on the George Lopez show. GL guitar player and Slash had a dual and it was not good. I give him props. He has come out with some really good songs. Then again GNR for me was not the same without Izzy Stradlin.

Why would you listen to it isolated?

That's like only reading the middle chapter of a book... It would make no sense.

Just my opinion anyway.

I believe that you have to distance yourself from determining what a good guitar tone is, by listening to it on it's own. It should be judged by how it will sound with a whole band. And that is where it should stand out. Does it have enough character to create something interesting?
I will even go as far as saying, that I could produce a much more interesting overall sound, with a Marshall miniature amp (the tiny $20 one), paired with a Roland Cube, than with a Herbert and a Mark IV.

I have yet to try it... Hell I only heard about it the other day.
What I love about Marshalls is that they can sound so different depending on who is on the other end of the cable. And then stick a pedal in it, and it can change totally again.

I just got an old JCM900, and it simply baffles me how much ground it can cover with a few pedals. I am lost in a sea of tone!!! Its more than I know what to do with...

I am a big Slash fan, and I love his tone. That said, it isn't MY tone. My type of tone, probably falls somewhere in between Slash and Warren Haynes...and that is a lot of ground to cover. Not quite as gritty as Slash, not as smooth as Warren. I suppose it depends how I am feeling that day. Definitely a lot more raw like Slash though. Even though his tone isn't the tone I strive for, I do love listening to it. Whether GNR, Snakepit or Velvet Revolver. You always know it is him....and that says something. I mean, to me his tone is pure rock and roll, maybe a little rough around the edges at times, but when its on, its on.

I do not even own a GnR album and I'm not a fan of slash by a long shot, nor do I care for signatue stuff for the most part... I prefer the classic metal Marshall tones from or old Scorpians, Maiden, Ride the Lightning etc....

Also tone is totaly subjetive and in the fingers... lol

With that said...

I BOUGHT AN AFD BECAUSE...

The amp seems cool as shit and has 6550's + a FX loop unlike the RR head and I'm pretty sure the Slayer "Dairy Queen" JCM800 DQ didn't have a loop either...

PLUS

I'm a Marshall Geek and I love the amps for the most part + I can get just about any decent tube amplifier to sound killer wit hthe right cabs, pups and an OD-9...
