I Have Metroplex Fever...

I had a used one without the latest updates (45/100 mode) for about 3 weeks and recently traded away for a Carol Ann 10th Anniversary head. I've also got one of George's 12,000 Plexi Replicas and the Metroplex for me while being more versatile with switchable modes and options was a good sounding amp but not spot on to the 12,000. A really good Super Lead or one of George's 12,000 is just perfect as is with no mods needed to me, it does not get any better for my taste. So it was a compromise. But to be fair and in hindsight having the real thing and expecting the Metroplex (more tones, options, and user friendliness) to be as good, same or better sounding was an unrealistic expectation Lol!

The Metroplex I imagine for some is perfect and Great on it's own. I did not think it sounded or felt that great until the volume was up to about 4 and then it started to get better. At 4 it was still a much more manageable volume than a cranked plexi so that is a plus. Attenuators such as the power station have gotten so good that volume is not as big as an issue as it may have once been. It pains me to say all this as I'm a Metropoulos fan boy just not a fan of this one.

I would be very happy with a MetroPlex based on this clip:

It sounds artificial to my ears. I think a good JCM800 with a pedal sounds better.

I heard clips that sounded better than this.

Is the Metroplex more vintage sounding than your BE?

I would like me a '67 Superbass from him or Germino. Wasn't crazy about those Metroplex clips. Agree that a decent 6 knobber, JMP or JCM with a good pedal would rock it.

the metro-plex isnt anything like a jcm 800 so if thats what youre after, yeah the MP is not for you.

that being said i returned mine (and a friend also didnt care for his). im actually thinking of trying one again, though, because its optionality was really nice and as someone already noted i think i had some unrealistic expectations of its dead-on plexi tones. its also a fairly specific type of plexi tone at its base.

i had a BE-100 at the same time and the two amps are very different. beside the obvious functional differences, the BE has way more available gain, is much tighter, and overall a more modern sounding amp. the MP is actually much closer to the SS-100, though the latter is still a tighter (and darker/smokier if you dial it in that way) amp.

the MP was also somewhat similar to the Helios i used to have (helios was a bit tighter and had more gain and more grit if you dialed it in that way).

depending on what amps one already has and how authentic they want their vintage tones, the MP can be the perfect amp or a little bit of a niche amp (because it doesnt quite nail vintage and yet isnt quite tight and gainy enough on its own for more modern stuff).

just my .02

Foe me the Metroplex is a great amp.
Definitely not artificial sounding to me.
I could get fantastic edge of break up and rolled back clean tones from it.
It has very useful features and from what I hear the new updated features
really bring the amp over the top.
Not a metal amp at all, more good old rock n roll and blues
which is exactly what I bought it for.
I can get a KILLER Hendrix sound outta it as well that a JCM 800 and a pedal would
not even come close.
The master is also spectacular and perfect for gigging.
If your out for a more vintage vibe( Depends on how u have it dialed in) this is a good one.
Modern , no, high gain palm muting, no blues, rock and hard rock, yes!

if you already have vintage plexi tones covered, you don't need the MP with your SS-100 i don't think!

I think your exactly right. The SS is just killer. Gonna hold off on the MP for now.
