I just don't seem to like celestions...

I just got a Port city 212 (standard size). I tried a V30, and T75. Sounded OK, but not great, tried two V30s, not great either. I have found in the past few years I just don't like V30s any more. I have never really liked T75s.

I do have a Scumback XH75-LHDC on order, should be here in about a week I am thinking about picking up wither an Eminence Wizard, or GB128 to go with it since those are both quite loud speakers, and should be able to hang with the XH75. My other option is to get a Weber with the 80 oz magnet and either a 75 HZ, or 50 HZ cone. I have really liked the Wizard when I had them in the past, they really seem to have a nice agressive high end to them, but I am thinking that the XH-75 LHDC should be similar, but better (from the descriptions I have heard).

Anyone here have any recomendations??

Try Eminence? They have a fairly deep catalog. Also, I've heard the Celestion G12-65s are extremely popular. See if you can find somewhere local where you might be able to demo, or put the word out and ask for clips.

The Eminence Tonespotter is the Eminence equivalent and sounds pretty good

I guess I should list what speakers I have tried recently, and what I have thougth of them to make it easier to make a recomendation.

Eminence Lynch super V12 - Sounded great in a 112, but I didn't like it as much in the Lynch 412. Overall a big fat clear speaker
Eminence Delta Pro 12a - I have never been a fan of EVM type speakers, and I find that the midrange on these just doesn't do it for me
Celestion G12T-75 - sounds a bit dull to me, I don't know what it is but they just don't seem agressive enough
Celestion V30 - not a very balanced speaker. I will be cranking them tonight to see if that changes things.
Mesa C90 - Pretty good
WGS ET65 - Very good, but not quite as good as a Scumback M75-LHDC
Scumback M75-LHDC - Awesome, just needs a bit more top end. I am sure that is why they are mixed with H75s. (shouldn't have sold them)

The 65's are where it's at for me I run a 2x12 w/65's into a 100 watt Einstein and love it! A lot of dudes like V30 mixed those in the X pattern in 4x12's. I've been meaning to get a used 16ohm V30 and mix it in the 2x12, don't see why it wouldn't sound good. . . .
A few companys are also making 'celestion' type speakers with hemp cones now. I was pretty much a emenince guy until a tried the 65's as well.
CL-80's by Celestion are another popular different option.

Celestion makes a lot more speakers than the V30 and T75. I don't think your problem is with Celestion, it's with the two models you've tried. Tripstan mentioned the CL80 and G12-65, both of which I think are excellent speakers. There are many other Celestion models as well.

Also Even though I didn't give it a long time I had a greenback in a Randall RM20, and I found it a bit dark, but that might have been the RM20.

It's hard to shop for speakers. Clips you hear can be misguiding because the cab differences will have an affect. Buying them new and installing them is misguiding because the speakers aren't broken-in.

I can never make up my mind. I always have a hard time buying just a speaker... I tend to give up and just find a cab with tone that I like and stay with what it has in it.

I agree, that is why I thought I would pick everyone's brains. I think the port city cab is great build quality, it is nice small light, and portable, but with so many factors the speakers can be a bit of a crap shoot, and it is rather expensive to go through so many of them.

Compared to a V30 many speakers sound dark. Don't be afraid to completely revamp the way you dial in your amp to suit the speaker. Use your ears and not your eyes or a preconception of where dials should be set.

As you probably know you have to match the speaker to the amp, this can be tough. I like Vintage 30's, but where they really shine is live with a band, they cut through great there.

i really like K100's for more of a heavy tone. they mix well with V30's too.

one of my favorite celestions are the EVH sigs. i have a pair. the are a little pricey though IIRC. they came in a 4x12" mixed with V30's i bought all of it for $100.

I used to love Celestions, particularly the V30, but they really grate on my ears now. So much so that I took them out of my cab and wanted to use them as a frisbee.

I much prefer Black Shadow speakers and EV speakers. I have a pair of WGS ET-65s now as well, but haven't wired them up yet. Hopefully I will by tomorrow.

I played with the EQ, gain, guitars etc for 20 min trying to get the V30s to sound good, and I just couldn't get a sound I really liked out of them. So I swapped them out. I decided to start big...Eminence Delta Pro 12a, and Lynch Super V12. It is killer!!!!! I am going to let me ears rest, and come back in an hour or so to evaluate again, but I am quite surprised at this since I tried the Delta Pro in a few front load oversized cabs, and I hated it. In a standard size rear loaded cab it seems to be a lot more alive, and less sterile!!!! I am not glad that I didn't sell that speaker.

Real 1980's 65's are expensive. But not hard to find. I bought my quad on eBay. There are usually some floating around. I've never tried ET65's, but I'd like to compare them and the Scumback versions.

I have seen 80's G12-65's for sale here and there, but they are always 16ohms and I want 8ohms. Do you ever see 80's G12-65's in 8ohms?
