looking at an old 1960a with celestion G12M-70's in it. for like $200 . or some other cabs with GT80's in them. I was told the 80's are shrilly and dont mic well at all. anyone experienced with these two speakers? the 70's arent the "70/80's" are they? those I had, and were garbage IMHO.

I have had one G12M-70, which are also known as the Modern lead 70's. I hated that speaker, Fine for clean, but got really buzzy and woolly with any kind of gain. Stay away from that speakers IMO.

The G12-80's are supposed to be the predecessor to the Classic Lead 80's (a speaker I really like). I have heard the Mesa Custom 90's are actually based off the G12-80's and not the classic lead 80's. Since I like the CL80's and MC90's, my guess is that I would really like the G12-80's, but I have not tried one yet :(

The CL80's mic well, have not tried to mic the MC90's for recording...

I played these speakers for 21 years. THey're meant for EL34's IMO. They have a big bass, and extended presence. Everything an EL34 doesn't have, so they add to the EL34 tone nicely to give it a balanced sound.
