What's the 411 on this amp?

Any one care to chime in?

SD80 II is a very cool amp. Covers a lot of ground.

Louder than a 100 watt plexi. Gain volume comes on pretty quick, but manageable.
More than enough gain on tap. Push/'pull on the mid gives you different gain structure.
Pretty decent clean channel too. Havent seen one used in awhile but sell under $1500.00

For real???

Looks like an attenuator is a must if I do get this amp.

How about the fx loop? Is it any good?

It's a LOUD Plexi type amp. Loudest amp I ever played/owned. Master volume goes from zero to holy shit real fast. Great tone, boosted mine for metal tones. Traded it for an Ultralead and like that amp better for my needs. SS rectifier, nice cleans. Vintage and classic/hard rock gain levels only without a boost.

Isn't the SD80 the one that was designed by Dave Friedman?

I've owned one for a while; don't pay more than 1200$ for a mint used one.
I found the tones pretty uninspiring, but that's just personal taste.

It's a great amp. Like someone said, it covers a lot of ground. It has a fast percussive attack and is plexi-like.
It's loud, but controllable. I can play mine at tv volumes without killing anyone.

Here's a video I did a few years ago.

I disagree about louder than a plexi. It can get loud, sure, but it is controllable. Great, great, great vintage gain tones and a nice clean channel too. No-fuss loop. Cathode biased. It's a very easy-going amp with lots of tone.

Indeed pretty straightforward. If it fits your type of tone, it's a steal at the price they're selling for used.

FX loop works well, pretty transparent. Great amp for single coils. The clean channel sounds really good with a boost in front (Timmy, EP Boost). Loud as all heel, but like others said, it is controllable.

I like what I'm hearing so far.

Vrad: your vid was one of those that peaked my interest in the SD80 in the first place. You were boosting, right?

And if I do get one, I will be boosting it with my Majik Box Rocket Fuel. for Doug Aldrich type gain levels and stuff.

So the fx loop won't have a problem with pedals I take it?

Yeah I boosted it with a MIJ SD-1. I'm running it thru a Mojotone 4x12 with Reissue GB's in that video. The guitar is a late 80's charvel model 2 body with a new Charvel neck and a Duncan Distortion in the bridge. The delay is a Roland SDE 1000 in the loop.

That's it... nothing special going on. No super exotic/expensive gear. :)

Sounds pretty damn sweet to me

I don't know what settings this guy had for this vid but is this a good representation of the SD80 with max gain, unboosted?

One of the best rock amps I can think of. Very nice clean, up to classic hardrock tones. The loop works well. Two thumbs up for everything but metal.

Yup. That's what it sounds like pretty much. Sounds unboosted... gain might not even be maxed out. Like 2-3:00. It's not low-gain per se. It's not a 5150 by any means, but it's not like just tube breakup or something. It's like a 2203 or late 70's JMP kinda gain. More than a plexi... If you boost it, it's an 80's wet dream :)

2203 or JMP gain levels when maxed is good enough for me.

Thanks for all the info, dude :)

Not a problem... :)

Also, oddly enough... I really liked this amp with G12T-75's for some reason... Go figure...

I could only get through a little of that video for various reasons, but the SD80 has more gain on tap that that unboosted. Not a whole bunch more, but definitely more.
