I saw a cover band with Marshall JVM's last night...

Both guitar player were running JVM's through marshall 4X12 cabs, and quite honestly i thought their tone was killer. Both guitarists were playing strats and had a very classic marshall tone going on. they weren't doing high gain at all, just old school rock tones... but it killed.

First time time i've heard the JVM, and i'm impressed.

I gigged with mine for a year or so . I loved it ! Out of all 12 modes though , I only played on one all night

I think they cover the spectrum rather well, It took a little time to get it dialed, hard to spend 30 min. with one and get everything where you want it, otherwise it can sound a little thin. After spending some time with it, it was much better. Not the best sounding amp ever, for every tone, but its real good, esp. for high gain. Also is very versitile. The switching setup is killer. Having said all that, I still have some others that do certian things better, but I will be keeping mine - Jim

Which one ? What kind of music?

I was in GC yesterday and i played a JCM800 and a JVM on the same cab with the same guitar. I thought the JVM was the better amp, by far.

It's the noise issues that put me off trying a JVM :( there's even a section of the JVM forum for it so I take it it must be bad

Mine is not noisey at all, my MK IV has more noise going on than my JVM. I agree with getting thin but that is when I am trying to get that plexi roar and the amp is about dimed, it just lacks something when you are really pushing air.

The switching just rules, great idea for sure.

Mine was noisy as hell in the two OD channels. When it got thin, is when trying to use any of the gain channels and try to run the gain less than noon. If you ran the bass higher to compensate, it got flubby. Great amp, but they need to tweak it a bit IMHO. Most amp manufacturers do that in the first year or two, but Marshall doesn't seem to once they've hit production.

Oh that's a deal breaker right there. I've never tried one, but I don't like the sounds of that.

My experience too. Above noon on the gain control (higher gain modes) would sound fuller, but had a million times too much distortion for me. That's where it got noisy and was just ridiculous amounts of distortion. Run it lower and the amp thins out. The next mode down didn't have quite enough distortion, so I could never really get it just right for me.

+2

I own a JCM800, and I agree with this statement. The JCM800 has a very cool thing going for it, but if you're a metal player (such as myself), the JVM is the better of the two.

but what if you use an OD pedal, what then?

I do use an OD pedal.... I also modded the thing myself for more gain, clarity, depth, etc.

I think redrol was asking if you boost the 800 with a pedal, then which do you prefer for metal? Thats cool you modded that yourself. I wish I could do that. I know just enough to be very, very dangerous

And I said that I boost my JCM800.

I'm not a "Metal" only player, and if I had to choose between the two, the only reason I might go with the JVM is the clean. Other than that, for my tastes the 800 is easily the better sounding amp. I ican see why a lot of the extreme gain guys like it, it sounds good with the gain up high. When you drop the gain, and try to get a medium gain or low gain sound, I think it falls flat on it's face.

Pretty much what I was trying to say. I wouldn't choose it if I were going for a low or mid gain amp, but for a metal high gain sound, I'd choose the JVM over the 800.

I was hoping the crunch channel would be the gunned 800 sound and if you get the volume up it is not bad but it is missing that roar that a good 800 brings, it is not as alive sounding.
