I have stated many times that I dislike these speakers, especially with Marks. They are scooped and can be woofy on the low end and buzzy/piercing on the treble side. I'm a fan of rich midrange speakers like Weber Legacy/Scumback/Mesa C90 other high powered GB and H type speakers...

Anyway, I recently picked up a stock 1960B with plans to swap speakers or at least run a mix with the 75s to balance out the mids.

Ran my Mark IV tonight with the cab, set my graphic eq up to fill in what the 75s lack (lots of 2200, a little low mids and left the 750 alone...maybe cut it a touch)

Holy shit, I was getting some great tones! I'm used to my boogie cabs with webers and still prefer them, but this Marshall cab actually sounds great! It's big and a little spongy but has this certain sheen and vibe to it that I can't get with the Mesa cab, which is more balanced, refined and tight. I know it's not the most desirable tone these days, but I was NAILING the Black Album tone when I ran the gain high and when backed off, it was very vintage and had a nice bark to it. I also have 34's in the outer sockets of my Mark and I'm sure that's contributing...

Are they my new favorite? No, but they are definitely not as useless as I thought. In the right situation, they are pretty nice actually. I'll post a clip tomorrow if i can find some time.

its a great speaker.

I've heard them in person so many times and only liked them with a couple amps, mostly JCM 800 and the like. Played them with my buddy's Mark once and HATED them. I guess I found the right eq settings. :dunno:

I have a late 70's 1960b that was "upgraded" to 75's and then beat to hell and back. Every amp I play through it sounds good. Regarding your experience people forget how important it is to set your amp up for the speakers you have. They also forget how volume plays into it. If you play loud the 75's almost always sound great, same with v30's. Play at low volumes and they don't sound as good, at least over here. :)

For sure. I just kept turning up the master and laughing at how good it sounded. :D There was no urge to tweak, just rock! I'm still going to mess with the cab, of course. Try mixing some speakers tomorrow possibly...hoping it will only get better!

Oh, forgot to mention; it seemed to sound and more importantly, "feel" better when I ran my 4 ohm tap into the 4 ohm input, as opposed to running the 8ohm out into the 16 ohm side... I switched back and forth a couple times right after I dialed the amp in and there was definitely some difference. Felt punchier, meatier...more immediate with 4 ohms.

I like them. I run my Mesa Mark lll through a Marshall 1936 cab. It sounds fine to me even at low volumes.

Cool thing is at least you gave them a chance. Great when you can find something that works.

I've also been on a speaker quest for a long time until I decided to do it the other way around and make a speaker/cab combination work for me.

Since I'm regularly forced to use the venues cabs and a lot of them have 1960 cabs I bought 2 with 75's in them to learn them a bit better. Turns out they work great. They do like a bit of volume and that's where the low sensitivity comes in handy.

Of course they're good speakers!

The only reason they have a bad rep around here is because they come stock (*gasp*) in mass-produced Marshall-branded cabinets (*gasp*).

I'm leaning more towards Eminence speakers these days, especially after my experiences with the WGS ET65S in my Whitebox Engineering 2x12 and the stock Legend-based speakers in the Jet City cabs.

I just put 2 diagonal in a 4x12 with 2 v30 and the mix is much better than 4 v30, especially when you turn it up.

i've always felt you have to tweak the mids and crank the amp on a 75 loaded cab. i've got both an a and b cab. i have no complaints. makes sense when you consider how a marshall head is voiced. once they're up to a decent volume level they sound fine.. imho.

I've always liked them when I've heard other ppl's rigs live....but I can't handle the highs when I've tried them out.

You discovered something that I've been preaching for years...re-eq'ing your amp based on the speakers. So many players will have their preferred settings based on a particular speaker and dismiss any other speaker that doesn't sound good at those settings. Twist some knobs if you don't like what you hear!!! Obviously there will be certain things that cannot be overcome or mitigated (not every speaker can be made to sound good), but there are a lot of good tones to be found by dialing in an amp to match the speakers that are being used.

i have a couple 2-12" cabs loaded with some 1986 G12T-75's that just sound smooth as can be. breaking them in helps. most heads i've tried sound good through them, but Marshall variants sound the best through them. my blackstar head absolutely kills with those speakers, where my Carvin V3 sounded just ok. my carvin x100B sounded ok through them, until i modded the head....now it sounds great through them.

I approach things the with the attitude that, it must be stock for a reason. At least I used to. Gave them a chance several times in the past and always liked Greenback type speakers or Eminence versions which have that rounder rolled off high end thing and more mids...
I especially hated the 75s with the Boogie. For some reason, it sounds great with my current eq settings and the EL34s seem to add back some of the midrange as well.

Same with V30s; gave them a chance and even like them in some cabs, but overall I like them mixed or just replaced with a less "spiky" version from another manufacturer like Weber. The Gray Wolf is like my perfect version of a V30. My mesa cab is much happier with a Weber Legacy/Gray Wolf mix than it was with the V30s.

Thing about V30s and 75s, especially when run together; they cut through a band mix and don't get lost in the wash of the cymbals. I feel that there are lots of speakers that have a more pleasing and balanced tone when played alone or under a mic (greenbacks, H30, weber legacy, scumback M and H, weber gray wolf, creambacks, g12-65, some Eminence models,etc...
The 75s are by no means the best sounding speaker for me, just happened to find the eq settings on my Mark that make them work. And the 1960B dimensions seem to really like them. Lots of deep 'push' and air moving. I can see why they are great for live performance. Thing is, lots of that buzzy treble that a lot of "refined" speakers roll off is just what helps you cut in a live mix.

I have always liked the G12T-75's particularly with Marshalls. They can sound top heavy alone but they start kicking ass when you throw the bass in drums in mix, really cuts through live.

people always like/want what someone else has. since you dont have these in your mesa cabs its a new sound. i'm sure marshall uses these for a reason

I hated the T75s for a long time until I bought a beat to hell JCM900 cab. You know what? They're phenomenal! Seems like any speaker takes years and years of heavy use before they sound really good, and the T75s are no exception.

Now you guys are making me re-think my opinion on these. I have a quad collecting dust in the garage. Maybe ill load them in a cab and see whats up.
