A few weeks ago I was seeking out a beater guitar to use as a touring spare.
Luckily i came across this black RG321MH a mate was selling. It was korean made in cort factory in '05 going by the serial and is one of those rare gems you occasionally stumble across. It has seriously had maybe 5 hours playing time, great frets (which turned out to be loose haha), no fretwear, in fact the only sign its ever been played is a bit of corrosion on the bridge. Obviously it wasn't wiped down and put in its case for a few years. Best of all i paid $250 for it in an SKB hard case. First of all I tested out a bunch of pickups in it to see what would work, expanded the nut for my string gauges and set it up. It sounds great and plays fantastic with a pretty low action and not much buzz, the frets are all level and don't need any work at all. Obviously it's nowhere near the level of quality of my BRJ's but for a $250 guitar it was smokin'.
So anyway, once i worked out what pickups would best suit it i ordered a stack of parts for the guitar and thought i would do a build story thread for you guys. The finish leaves the guitar open-grained and looks really cool, it's probably why it sounds so good. I have thought about sanding it back but i really can't be bothered.
the treatment:
-Bareknuckle painkiller bridge (white uncovered)
-Bareknuckle cold sweat neck (white uncovered)
-Gotoh hardtail bridge (black)
-planet waves trim-lock tuners (black)
-Dunlop flushmount straploks (black)
-3 way tele switch (centre outer coil taps)
-CTS volume pot
-black pickup rings or modded for direct mount (unsure)
-killswitch (black, in place of tone knob)
-white knobs and switch tip (i have a few colours to experiment with actually).
-Custom cut Buffalo Bone Nut
-PLEK fret-dress & setup
Now it holds its own against my other guitars, both playing wise and tone wise. The painkiller complements the guitar's tone perfectly and the mids sit really well. It's very clear sounding and has a huge sonic footprint.
Completed with the new nut & PLEK
