Ibanez RGD Prestige - Good Metal Guitar?

I've been looking at the Ibanez RGD 2127z 7-string while seeking out a guitar for metal. I'd tune it to standard B, and I'm hoping the longer scale length will give it a tighter tone. The only thing I don't like is that it has a trem. As of now I only play hardtails, but maybe it'd be fun to mess around with the trem as long as it stays in tune. Otherwise the specs on this guitar fit what I'm looking for. That is, a metal focused axe for under $2000.

Anyone tried it and any comments? Any other guitars I should be looking at? I'd consider also consider a 6-string but I'd end up tuning it down to B or C.

While I havent honestly played that model, just about any RG based prestige has been pretty kickass whenever I played them. I remember specifically the RGA 121 was an awesome guitar and prob my favorite ibanez I have ever played! I was mad when I heard they discontinued it

YES! It's a great guitar for what you would be looking for as it already is tuned nice and low from the factory. The stock pickups in it aren't my favorite but those are easily changed! I was going to buy one but they had none up here at the time.....

I ended up with an Apex 100 custom which is another awesome guitar!

I have an RGD320 on the way. I tried a 7 string once...and failed.

I tried the RGD2127Z and absolutely loved it. The RGD curves are very nice, neck profile is amazing (almost 'home' like to me), trem is awesome and I especially love the control layout. I couldn't afford it at the time but do plan on purchasing one and throwing in the Seymour Duncan Blackouts. Ibanez really did do a great job with these ones.

My RGD320 showed up today, used from GC. THe thing is literally MINT. Of course, the trem bar disappeared, but I think I have one around somewhere... Anyway, it feels solid, fit & finish are great for the price point, and I think it's a winner. I get some new strings on it and set it up and report back.

*EDIT* oops...I see what you're angling at now with the guy irked about the disc'o of the 121. I had one of those too. The dark brown one -"violin" maybe? Anyway, probably one of the nicest hardtails I've played in MANY years.

Yeah, great guitar. I just put a Crunch Lab in it and I have a Liquifire I need to put in it as well.

So I got my RGD today. Whoever *tried* to set that thing up was blind, deaf, and a bass player. Maybe even a drummer! Anyway, I threw some new strings one and gave it a proper setup. It was a pain, but now it plays GREAT! I was used to playing drop-D, so having the whole guitar down a whole step took a little thinking, but I'm getting there.

As I said, fit & finish were very good. Once I had it set up, it was rock solid. The neck is the usual Wizard profile - thin & flat. Fretwork was good - no complaints. The trem is fine - stays in tune. I set the action @ 3mm, since it's tuned low - a little breathing space. The weak spot - the pickups. Dreadful. I'll have to fix that. Not sure what to use for a down-tuned guitar since I've never had one, but I'm thinking the old stand-by JB will be just fine.

All in all, for $300, I can't complain. Sure has me thinking about looking around for a 7-string...
