swapped out speaker and other cables, along with movement to different power sources, but the idle noise with guitar vol pot is still a bit much for me even on simple clean.

What are the conventional decision paths here, move around the 12AX7's, then move toward the EL34s as last resort?

What kind of noise? and does it happen with the guitar off? Pickup noise?

I would check the pre amp tubes but can say from experience
it sounds like the power tubes.
I had the same problem and changed power tubes and its gone.
Are they JJ's?

How well do the Mullards work in the Marsha? got some nice ones from Kilgore a while back that I have in my 78JMP. Still need to do due-diligence though. Now that I think about it I do remember tossing some JJ's a while back that red plated and replaced with Svetlana's that worked well.

All tubes suck. I really don't like wing c tubes with it though. Chinese BHT or the new sensor Mullards are cool also. JJ's are great and have no more trouble then any tube these days.

Sorry this took so long, been busy. Here is an mp3 of the noise and a camera shot of the tube glow on the EL34's. This is a 50watt Marsha. Doesn't seem like red plate to me. If you need the back cover off and a better pic, let me know.

Just switching between neck and bridge pickups and string muting occasionally.

I have the exact same sound in my Friedman Modded Marshall. I have mine at Dave's shop right now because I have the noise in your mp3 but also getting a harsh, trebly tone. Almost like the "muscle" and low end is not there.

What kind of noise are you getting when you play riffs, etc.? Does it sound the same but with just the hissing, etc. you included in your mp3?

Check the electrical in your house. One thing that causes noise like that is flood lighting with dimmer switches.

certainly the hissing, during riffing.

Sorry, I didn't explain that right. Does the amp still have the same tone as when you got it, just with hiss and extra noise, or has the tone changed a bit all-around?

Tone is not as good out of the box..

You mean that guitar buzz? there is no hum. If the guitar vol is rolled off is the noise gone? if so its guitar noise. Normal. You don't happen to be using a speaker cable for a input cable are you? that would cause that noise also

Send it back if you think there is a problem and it will be fixed for free.

What about winged =C='s don't you like Dave?

I use them with NOS Blackburn Mullard & Amperex pre's and get good results in my JMP's.

They sound thin and bright to me. They didn't use to just in recent years.

Which tubes do you prefer in your amps?

I like JJ but could use chinese or mullard reissues

I bought my Marsha used with Winged C's...just recently put in JJ EL34L's and it was an noticeable improvement. As Dave says, the Winged C's sounded thinner (although I can't say how old/used they were).

How about 04 Shugang EL34-B's old stock ?

Dave is the bias procedure for the Marsha identical to standard Marshall?

I guess these are TADs that came with the new Marsha, don't know which one though.
