If I was to get a Variac????

I use mine and it sounds great.. It's a Tenma (print's too small), I think, 15 amp, made in Taiwan. I hook a power strip to the variac and plug my amp in one socket, and a volt meter in another so I know exactly what AC voltage I have. Drop voltage, then check DC across pins 8 and 3, and calculate what the bias should be, according to the tube,(EL34,6CA7, 6L6GC) and adjust the bias.

My 6505+ sounds awful with the voltage dropped below 110, and I think it won't even come on if it's under 100 VAC. My 5153 sounds mean as fuck around 100, and so does my BE100. Plenty of thump, not that much sag, but like III said, I guess you can call it grind, I really like the tone.

Go back to junior college and learn Spanish.

Because electricity is not your forte.

Just buy the 5 and check it out, if you like it fine, otherwise keep it around, just in case you want to run Woodstock.

Probably a different kind of answer, but I've just got a UK variac so that I can get a consistent voltage to my amps. I've seen UK wall voltages range from 225V to 246V.

So, if I were to get a variac... It'd be to keep my amps sounding sweet.

I could totally understand that.

Ameren UE power here is very consistent.

Ive got 3 Furmans with meters and the +/- voltage in my house is only about 2 volts.

I use the Tenma 72-110 got it directly from John Suhr to use with my Marshall Super Lead
My Marshall is biased to run at no higher than 95 volts, I usually run it between 70-90 volts
Makes the amp sag, and lowers the volume a bit, useful when you run the amp dimed!
