without that mid-range honk that's kinda grating on my ears which amps should I be looking at?

PS. I need another amp like I need a hole in the head. LOL!

Those Engl Artist's(Steve Morse) amps sound pretty good....Engl QC would be my only concern.

I kind dig the 5153 6L6 50 watters and the 5153 100 watt EL34's sound pretty ripping IMHO.

SLO. 100 or 30 are good.
Always hated that mid range in the OG 5150s. SLO is much better.
The newer 5150 Stealth 50 watt is good, but a bit more modern sounding.

Man, I love the mids on the 5150/6505. Just shows how different we all are.
When in rehearsals or playing live I would typically run the mids at about 4. It sounded a little bit over the top on its own, but fit perfectly in the mix of a two guitar band. No high gain amp that I have ever owned cut-through like tha Peavey 5150II.

PRS Archon. Mean and similar voiced to me. I own an arcon and have owned a slew of 5150's. Cheap too. The first series USA heads are very well built

This is the most underrated comment here. I own a 6505+ and an original usa archon 100. They are very similar but the archon is a bit smoother. Such incredible amps

I was going to say. Show everyone your current collection so you don't get a bunch of recs for stuff you already have

Speaking of recs :dunno:
Most of what I have I wouldn't consider being in the same tonal realm as a 5150. So far there's been only 2.5 recommendations of something I already have; ENGL, KSR, and SLO.
My ENGL Steve Morse & Inferno don't sound much like 5150. Maybe a Savage or Powerball may be closer. Though I have the synergy modules of those 2 and wouldn't put it in the 5150 category.
KSR Gemini I like well enough. It might be able to substitute for a 5150, but there's something about it that makes me think it could be much better/closer. Someone once described KSR as being cardboardy. Hard to actually describe what that means, but I think I hear what they're talking about.
The half amp I have is a SLO. That's on my project list. I have the majority of what I need to build a SLO 100 clone. Just need a chassis and some miscellaneous parts.

I've looked into the Archon before. I don't remember why, but it didn't really hold my attention. Maybe I should revisit them.

i dont hear that honk in my 5153 EL34 50w

This is kind of in the back of my head. With all the different versions out there could one of them be the right 5150 for me? Or do they all have that same midrange sound that I don't like?

I thought the Archon had that midrange honk big time.

I would get a Rectifier for honkless high gain metal.

The Iconic is pretty great too. TBH, Id probably grab that over the Stealth. Throw a BBE Sonic Stomp in the effects loop, and sounds pretty dang close to my Wizard and GZ modded SS100. EL34 is a tad bit darker/thicker than the 6L6.

The Archon is smoother/darker, with lower mids. A great amp, imo, but not one I'd want for my only amp. I keep the 50w combo for a grab n go. I do keep the mids pretty low, depth and presence on the higher side.

If we are mentioning the EVH Iconic, I feel the Engl Artist does the same type of tone better with a less forward mid presence and just sounds voiced better. Between the two I’d go Engl Artist if your concern were honky mids. If you want to cut in a live band mix the Iconic may perform better in that regard IMO.
