if you still gig with a 412 cab, why?

Hi guys,

I am thinking of getting another 412 cabinet, it has been so long and I know they are not necessary. However, there is something I miss about playing through a 412 cab once in a while. I thought I could go with a large Mojo diagonal 212 but here is someting special about playing through a 412 cab. I don't play metal, only classic rock to hard rock and grunge.

Current cabs are a Stone Age 212C, Bogner oversized 212 and Splawn 212. I think by the time my new band starts to gig, I may investigate buying a slant top 412.

So, who is using one? Do you feel like me, that there is something special about a 412?

Thanks all. :)

For me - I find it easier to hear and feel my guitar with the 4x12 back there than a combo amp. More speakers = more air moving - even if you don't have the volume cranked up. I don't play any louder with the 4x12 than with a combo - just sounds fuller and bigger. For most rock bands, I think you just need this to get "that sound". I switched to combos for a while because I convinced myself they would be easier to haul and would take up less room. Truth is, a 4x12 with casters is easier to move than a combo and doesn't take up any more space really. Pluse, they just look so damn cool!!! So, I'm back to 4x12's.

I have a 4x12 and a 2x12,to me the 4x12 sounds much better-fuller,bigger sounding but then its going to i guess!well worth the extra weight.Looks better as well! Sometimes i use both but if i use one its always the 4x12. :)

:) Nothing magical about 4x12's ... it is the phase relationship of the speakers that gets that sound. Personally I use 2 ~4x12 regardless of the dB's I am using in most cases. Like mentioned .... it's just a bigger / fuller sound.

I will admit, my OS 212 cabs are much easier to move with one hand carrying the cab, and one carrying the amp head. However, I do miss it. Maybe by next year. I ordered a Splawn 212 but thinking I should have ordered the 412.

When I dis some comparison between my Stone Age and Bogner 212 cabs and my old Marshall 1960b, I could not hear or real much difference so I guess it can wait, LOL. I ended up selling my 2000 Marshall 1960 because it drove me nuts how poorly it was built and vibrated.

I use a full stack live. I can always hear myself no matter what the monitor situation is.

I play small clubs and DIY venues mostly. I use a 412 because often the places I play don't have a very good pa, and my volume is dependent on my own gear. Plus I like the slant because I can hear myself playing better. 2x12's I always had to put the cab on a table or something. Plus, as has been noted, they look cooler. I do eventually want to get a B cab and play a full stack, even though it's totally unnecessary. :)

Also totally agree that it is easier to move a 412 w/ casters then a well built 212. Used to take me two trips, one for the head and one for the cab, now I just put the head on the cab and roll away. And yes, newer Marshall cabs are terrible IMO.

For me it is always easier to carry a 212 because I can grab the 212 with one hand and the head with the other. I am used to dead lifting close to 500 lbs so carrying a 65 lb in one hand is not an issue.
Plus, 212 cabs are easier for me to squeeze into my trunk as well. I sold my last 412 because it was a pain in the ass up and down the steps all the time by myself and then having to make an additional trip for the head. This way I just grab both the head and cab and go. But, I do miss some things about the 412. I don't think my wife will approve, so it may have to wait till we get out of the condo. Nice thing is, the 212 cabs I use, are almost as tall as a 412 and have nice slanted from baffles.

Alternatively, I may go this route as it easily competes with a 412 and is almost as big: Diagonal 212 - 27x26x14

I play one of my 9 watt amps through a 4x12 at home. There's nothing quite like the impact of a 4x12, no matter how hard a 2x12 (ported or otherwise) can be run, you can't match the cone movement of four 12" speakers vs two.

The OS Port City 2x12 is the closest I've heard to a 4x12 in side by side tests, by the way.

I had a Port City 212 but could noit sell it fast enough. Way too boomy and unbalanced sounding. I will probably order another Stone Age since the Stone Age 212C is the best 212 I have played.

I use 2x12's because they fit in my car.

Nothing sounds like a 4x12.

Ink I am going to keep my Splawn 212, Stone Age 212 and Bogner 212 as my 212 cabs and have the Cab Guy build me a 412 to my specs and pop in some light weight WGS Green Beret speakers. :)

I prefer 2x12s but I gig with a 4x12 because many places I play have crap PAs and need the stage volume.

+1

If you have a good amp a 4x12 will sing at any volume. I have had 5 back surgeries and would really love to use a small combo amp, I have never played one that didn't sound thin compared to the 4x12.

Have any of you guys tried the G-Flex 2x12s? I use them and one is as loud as my 1960 or the Randall cabs I used to have and they are alot lighter...

But to be honest, most closed 2x12's I have played through just are not as loud and do not have the bottom end as I get from the G-Flex's.
