For the Nerds, they got the guy who obsesses over the tone to partner with them.. Sounds good but still missing tube depth imo.
Another demo of the new ToneX 78-79:
I can definitely see how my marketing is WAY behind haha
i’m not nearly the VH rabbit holer some of you guys are but i find it very interesting that i stumbled on to certain elements he’s mentioned like 250k v 500k volume pots and using a tom holmes 450 7.8k neck pickup in my bridge position simply because that’s all there was available to me at that moment in time. i ended up liking the outcome and stuck with it. very much in the spirit of evh early years. So Jim pulled V4 and V5 power tubes and runs the amp on V7 V8 only a pull operation in a push pull circuit......now that's a first.I remember people doing the one power tube thing many years back and I thought that was crazy as well even though they swore by it.
If that were indeed the case that would explain Ed supposedly replacing alot of output transformers cited in a all the interviews, but then he would still need to slave to get the volume back live.
I can't deny Jim seems to have captured the tone and like he said he has tried every single urban legend out there and this is what he arrived at and the tone does seem to be there but on his original Brown Sound quest video he did pull two tubes correctly and that clip sounded equally great still running the amp in push/pull operation.
I'm pretty happy with how close a heavily variaced stock or close to stock Marshall plexi/superlead sounds so I won't be pulling V4 and V5 since I like my output transformer the way it is.....but it's cool to hear what Jim did to get those 78/79 captures!![]()
I do like the Duncan WLH with the rough cast short A-5 but it's like 8.7K and my 78 model is still a great pickup. Maybe I'll try a 250K pot with my 7.8K Steckel and see if I like that.i’m not nearly the VH rabbit holer some of you guys are but i find it very interesting that i stumbled on to certain elements he’s mentioned like 250k v 500k volume pots and using a tom holmes 450 7.8k neck pickup in my bridge position simply because that’s all there was available to me at that moment in time. i ended up liking the outcome and stuck with it. very much in the spirit of evh early years.
+1 Holdsworth. particularly late 80s-early 90s boogie era tone live with Gary Husband on drums was like an alien rock concert!Imagine how many more units Line 6 and Fractal would sell if they just marketed a brown sound factory patch?!
The most elusive tone that I've yet to find is Allan Holdsworth's smooth, sax-like, clear, articulate, glassy lead tone. Not that I can play anything remotely Holdsworth-y, I just dig that sound.
while speaking with Tom on the phone when i ordered my pickup from him, i mentioned i wasn’t a fan of the 57/57+ classic. Tom then told me he helped design those pickups with Gibson. oops my bad!I do like the Duncan WLH with the rough cast short A-5 but it's like 8.7K and my 78 model is still a great pickup. All those boutique pickups and Jim uses a neck gibson 57 classic with a 250K pot.......
Just because Tom holmes helped design doesn't mean they were built to his exacting standards necessarily.while speaking with Tom on the phone when i ordered my pickup from him, i mentioned i wasn’t a fan of the 57/57+ classic. imo they didn’t sound like a holmes to me. too much scratchy treble bite and thin by comparison.

Yep, single pot no tone control...........Gaustads premise is Ed wired his strat with a standard Fender 250K strat pot and liked that better than a 500K. Maybe it was one of those happy accidents..............with a bright pickup with a shrill unpleasant high end it would help thingsSo VOL thing, is it one Vol pot no tone and humbucker wired to 250K? If that's the case, I think I like that too. Adds some chewiness.
