I'm not feelin' this whole Multi-FX thing (G-Major)..

I decided to give the G-Major another go over the past week, before deciding whether to keep it or sell it. I'm not feelin' it. As soon as the FX-Loop is engaged; it doesn't matter if theres any effects on or not, it just takes so much out of my tone (Clean Tone especially), it makes it sound very dull and flat sounding.

So here's where i have to make a decision; I'm goinna order a road-case for the JVM, a Live-In Case, with a 4/6 Space Rack. Originally, if i got the G-Major sorted out, i had planned to sell it anyways and buy a G-System to control my entire rig. But now i'm not so sure. I've been thinking of going down to the GCX/GCP Route (Some people had mentioned this), and for my effects, shedding out a few bucks on some Stand alone pedals (Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Xotic BB) and running these through the GCX so i can pull them in and out of the loop if i want.. And hopefully retain my Tone.

Do any of you guys run a set-up like this? How do you's like it?

Thanks

A bypass looper is definitely cool. If those pedals match your amp's loop level is a different story though . . .

It might be worth checking if the loop itself sucks tone or not; simply put a patchcable between send and return, switch on the loop and see what happens. If even that sucks tone you're fucked as a looper and separate pedals will not sound right.
OTOH, if only a patchcable doesn't degrade the tone, the looper way might work for you.

Good luck !

Giga.

How do you have everything set on your JVM to work with the GMajor? Series/Parallel, levels, etc...?

Erm, I have it running in the 'Serial/Parallel Loop', the levels on the G-Major are nearly up full (Input, and Output) and the loop is set to 100% Wet. Are there things in the G-Major that i should/can change?

Zero Change in Tone with just a patch cable in the loop.

I'm thinkin' the GCX, GCP Rig might be a solution.

As far as the G Major goes, you need to ensure that level of the G Major matches the level of the JVM loop. Their is a setting in the I/O menu of the G Major for PRO and CONSUMER. PRO is for +4db loops and CONSUMER is for -10db loops. The unit defaults to PRO. You need to ensure that this setting is set to match the level of the loop on the JVM. I believe the JVM has a switch to select either +4/-10db. When properly set, my input and output on the G Major aren't set nearly as high as yours to achieve unity gain.

Very good point, and i was about to post this info too! Try switching to either Pro or Consumer and see how you go!

I gave the G-Major another shot today, ran through all you guys said to me. I then checked the "PresetOutLV" and it was always at -6dB, changed it to 0dB. And it all sounds dandy. :) I guess i'll have to do that to all my presets, but it's no biggie.. I've actually got the G-Major sounding good in my rig, and theres very little change in Volume/Tone now..

Thanks Guys! I have a gig this saturday, so i might order a GCP tonight.. and a small cheap rack case. :D

One question though, does the G-Major have Phantom Power for midi controllers? Or will i have to use an AC Adapter for the GCP?

The G-Major has all the patch outputs set as -6db as a default setting to allow level boosts on individual lead patches. In other words, you can boost your lead patch by either 3 db or 6 db (-3 db or 0 db settings).

There is another global output level in the i/o area where you can adjust the output of the G-major. Set this to +14db and you won't have to crank your levels so high, and this will also allow you to leave the -6db settings on all your patches.

The noise gate is the most important effect to get right when using the G-major with the JVM in the OD channels. You must balance all the parameters for the particular patch, but once you get it set right it is beautiful!!! My band plays LOUD heavy rock and my JVM is absolutely DEAD quiet even in the highest gain patches.
