i swear i am such a fan of this era of music it's insane. burt bacharach is my songwriting hero, carpenters, early motown...compared to today's stuff...so much better music back then.

i was jamming "green eyed lady" today on the way to work, then "what you won't do for love"...what a drum grove and tone!

sweet! i like ABBA. Ritchie Blackmore was a big supporter of them believe it or not! he song "Magic" from difficult to cure album was based off one their tunes.
hotties..yes!

When we lived in Germany for a long stretch of my childhood... ABBA was king of the hill. Remember riding the Himalaya at the carnival to ABBA songs blaring. And the blonde was such a hottie.... Ahhh the memories of childhood.

How they got in the RRHOF is beyond me.

They are hands down way beyond Rush.... something has gone tragically wrong with the RRHOF. Neil Diamond totally rocks.

just so people don't think i've totally lost my mind here's a nice gtr moment with brent mason to jab into this thread:

but back to abba,

as a kid i had a crush on these girls, ginger, wilma flinstone and daphene from scooby doo.

I can appreciate all styles of music, and being a kid at that time, I thought ABBA was great and still do, and those chicks were definitely hot back in the day

Its unreal how many people say ABBA suck. But they know all the tunes Hmmmm. They wrote great pop tunes that stick in your head and you still remember 35 years later. I would say they were a great band and yes the gals were nice to look at. Their tunes always bring fond memories of High School in the 70's along with UFO, Rainbow etc

They had SO MANY great songs.....
Knowing me Knowing you.......*sigh*
That has to be my Fave...

I'm with Mailman. The guilty pleasure for sure. When they come on the radio I'll crank it up!!! Love those voices together.

Brings back those late 70's/early 80's times. Good stuff.

  and them long legs :D

I think my mom's fondness for ABBA and my dad's fondness for BOSTON formed a rift which ultimately resulted in their in divorce. Personally, I never thought ABBA was good and still don't. Maybe the Spice Girls of the late '70's?

I've played a couple of ABBA-tunes both in acoustic gigs and in bands.
It's like Stevie Wonder, great songwriting by people who know how chords and music work.

i always thought blondie sorta took the abba melodies and made them heavier, but followed in their footsteps.

i can't even begin to imagine how much cocaine early 80's superstars were surrounded by. you guys ever hear the stevie nicks coke stories?

I must admit... Abba were fantastic. I still love their music, even though when I first heard them I was too young to understand what half of their cornball lyrics were about. Now when my 3.5 year old daughter sings along I have to laugh sometimes. But they wrote great pop songs, fantastic harmonies, and they had very solid musicianship behind it. All that adds up to being the most successful band in the history of pop music... or one of the top 5 at least.

I've been contemplating doing a remake of one of their songs with my band in our modern prog rock style.

Its all preference really but there was just something about the songwriting, the hooks, the melodies and especially the Harmonies. Supertramp was another band that I liked for all of the same reasons as ABBA.
