I'm looking for a personal in ear monitor system for myself. I play guitar and sing, and in the venues we play, I can never hear myself. I was going take the slave out of my amp (Egnater Mod 50) and also the extra output of my vocal processor (TC Voicelive) and plug those into an in-ear transmitter. I just need to decide on one.

Budget: $600
Must haves: limiter, good noise cancellation ear buds, 2 mixable inputs.

Any ideas? What do you guys use?

Shure SE215: $100 for good-quality ear buds that sound great for their price point, and fit (at least the fit me) like custom molds.
Carvin EM900: $400

Honestly, I'd save up another $500 and get the Sennheiser EW300 G3 IEM's.

Yes and no... :)

Hell yes on the Carvin, I've gigged with the prior version for 5 years now no issues.

Hellz no on Off the rack ear buds. The Shures, Meh...

I got these single drivers, (Cause I'm cheap!) they are $200

WORTH EVERY PENNY. I got a local Audiologist to do the molds. He is a bass player and refused to charge me! Lol

They are pro, feel fantastic!

The SECOND you get any sweat on your head, (Dunno about you but I rock the fuck out on stage) Any buds that use foam, etc... will flop right out of your ear.

There is a reason pro musicians get the custom molds,,,

The Shures use rubber inserts that fit very snugly, I have yet to have one fall out (I even use a pair in the gym or when I go running), and they are very, very comfortable. I have no issues wearing them for 6-8 hour rehearsal/writing sessions. And yes to off-the-rack earbuds for one simple reason: not everyone gets along with them. Best to save even a little money just in case they decide they hate them.

I know I was on the fence when I first started, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to gel with them in a live situation. Custom molds from JH Audio are in the cards for when we hit the road again, but at first I refused to spend the money on something custom that has zero resale/return value. It would be a pretty expensive pair of iPod earbuds if, like I said, they end up not enjoying IEM's in a band setting. Our other guitarist, for example, while he enjoys the concept of using them, and has in rehearsal a couple of times, the actual experience wasn't very enjoyable for him. He is still a floor wedge guy at the moment.

Yea, pro musicians get custom molds....after having used them for years. I know just as many pro musicians who used them, got custom molds.....and then after a tour with them, went right back to wedges.

It's ok to bust the bank a bit more on the trans/receive system. Returns and resale are an option there.

As far as Carvin or Sennheiser, yea, it's hard to go wrong either way. The Sennheiser does come out on top in terms of sound quality, and Sennheiser wireless systems are well known for being rugged and trustworthy. My old singer used the EW300 G3 on several hectic, large national tours and had exactly zero issues.

At the end of the day, the lesson is this: you cannot return in-ear style buds, especially custom ones, so you better make sure you want to use them long-term before dropping serious money on them.

The "Cheaper" shures are single drivers. $100-$200, then getinto the $300+++ for more drivers.

I started out with the E2's? I think... Single drivers.

So for $200 for custom, I don't know why anyone would go, $150 for "Possibly totally wrong un returnable fit" crapshoot in ear buds...

Just saying. I need them to stick in my head, I'm very active on stage.
I got sick of jamming the freeking thing into my skull so they wouldn't slip out. Again, IMO and my usage/experience, I ws fronting a Maiden tribute so "Playing Bruce" with the running around and singing, I got sweaty. The Custom molds well because it's your ear hole! haha, ain't going any where, very comfortable, perfect seal. No more Maiden, but I still move around al lot! Frontman's gotta bring it...

The single drivers for the price and benefit are a great buy. I'm not listening to Mozart, don't need the audio detail. I need to hear myself, and the band clearly in my head, single drivers can do that.

My shure SE535 broke inside my ear.. sucked insanely. Great sounding plug tho. Just use them for everyday reference headphones.

My last reply wasn't even in regards to your post I was Providing more information in regards to his question About single drivers...
In fact I did read your post, It seems we both have opinions imagine that!

But since your a,

And,
I've been on this board longer than nearly all of you, don't assume I'm some idiot "newb."

We will go ahead and let your opinion be more valid. Don't want to have you think anybody's assuming anything about what you say....

I am, that's how I make my living. Apparently I'm the sandy vag, yet you bring that into it...Hmmm. What sort of stages do you "rock the fuck out on," exactly? Local bars...maybe some local clubs one a month or so?  My bad for clearly stating my profession, apparently that's in bad form.

Another dickhead on this board, how shocking.

Insecure much?

I was just talking about monitors and music on the forum that I love I don't know why your here....

I've had a carvin em900 for over 2 years now...no problems... out of curriosity recently I bought the sennheiser iem g3 and it was noiser than the carvin... it was easy to synch, but other than that for almost triple the price.. not worth it... off it went.. carvin is still here.

I have custom triple driver buds.. they are worth the money if you can swing it if not just make sure you get some that seal properly.

This

I have used the budget Shure and the Audio Technica M. They are shit compared to Sennheiser EW300. But, with any of them, be prepared to toss the ear buds and buy a set of Shure 435's.

I use the shure psm200 but have been thinking of switching to a stereo system. What exactly does a stereo system do? I have been getting a mix from the sound guy with a little guitar, talk box, all vocals and keys. I use the 2nd channel for my guitar only so I can adjust volume from stage if need be. I'm looking at the Carvin em900...reading a lot of good reviews for the price and it is stereo.
