Quick question......
what would you or do you prefer?

gtr>flanger>overdrive>amp
or
gtr>overdrive>flanger>amp

Currently, Im running the mxr flanger> mxr od> into dirty amp. Seems like the flanger is more pronounced when the OD is on. Also, do you guys keep the mxr evh flanger in front of the amp or in the loop?

Thanks,
Brian

OD>Flanger...

I would put the overdrive first, then the flanger. I only use my loop for rverb and delay. So overdrive then falnger in front of the amp. You can also check out some of the boards on Dave Friedman of Racksystems and see the order on some of his builds to get some ideas.

I do it the opposite gtr > flanger > od > amp. I don't want to overload the input of the flanger, but I DO want to overload the input of the amp (assuming it's a tube amp).

exactly! basically im using the OD pedal as a small volume/gain boost to an already dirty tube amp to push it a bit more.

 Since flanging is a time-based effect, I'd probably run it in the loop, anyway, or at least try it.

Nah, I heard the mxr drops volume in the loop so Im running it up front.

Does your loop have a switch for pedal or line-level effects?

flanger is just better in the loop.

phase is ok out front.

also, i would be cautious slamming the flanger with a dirt pedal. i kindda think i hurt my phaser a little doing that, it just doesn't seem to sound as good as it used to?

I havent tried it yet in the loop, but I guess I could see how that sounds. I just read that the mxr loses volume in the loop and doesnt sound right. But then again I did read this on harmony in the review section so I dont have personal experience.
I have read that the mxr flanger is better in front of the amp. So thats where it is now and it sounds good. Its just that when I have the OD on the flanger gets more intense sounding 'cause Im boosting its output with the gtr>flange>od>amp set up.
I saw EVH go gtr>flanger>phase>amp, not sure where he leaves the EQ pedal in that set up but Randy Rhoads did gtr>od>flanger>amp... so who knows. Guess its just personal preference.

it will have a volume drop in some loops, but i still think the sound is better there?

suppose EVH may have had it out front early on? that would be a question for the Metro guys. would like to beleave he had it after his load box, and before his slave amp?

on a lower gain Plexi type amp, probably wouldn't matter much where it is?
