Hey new here . I`m hoping that this week my Smallbox head will arrive. I got it used for a good price and it`s in excellent condition . I`ve heard all the rave reviews and heard all the killer clips but I`m wondering what it`s gonna sound like in person. The nicest amps I`ve owned in the last 3 yrs are the Splawn Super Sport and Quick Rod which were nice amps and the EVH 5150 50 watt that I have now and have really had a love hate relationship with. I've got a 2x12 with a Scumback M75 & Vntage 30 mix and a 4x12 with 2 M75s up top and 2 Vintage 30s on the bottom. I`ve got those 2 cabs in different rooms of the house and I usually play at fairly loud voulmes when no ones home. Just wondering what to expect compared to the amps I used to own. I like to play classic rock up to 80s high gain rock

I have had my small box for a while now and i truly love it. I owned a 50 watt evh for a long time and it sounds like a distortion pedal compared to the small box. The eq, effects loop, amount of gain, everything just works like it's suppose to with the smallbox. Its really hard to get a bad sound out of it. The clean ch is amazing and the volume rolls off like a champ on both channels. The feel and tone is miles ahead of the evh stuff and the clean ch is from a different universe when comparing it to the green ch.

The thing i hated the most was how fizzy the 5150 III was in the room. The small box is sweet and compressed and really polished without losing that vintage charm. Just turn the gain up all the way on both channels and let it rip. You can play anythings from ac/dc to more modern hard rock with this amp. Hit it with a koko boost and your into heavy metal territory. You could really only set the eq one way with the 5150 III the small box likes all sorts of different eq settings and gain levels, its very versatile for how simple the controls are.

Thanks for the info , the 5150 does have that fizz that is hard to dial out even after numerous tube swaps , still the amp has it`s moments but I just can`t see myself living with any longer.

Got the SB yesterday and got it fired up today. After playing the raging 5150 50 watt for a better part of the the SB seemed low gain on the BE channel with the gain almost 3/4 of the way up so I think my ears are just gonna need to get used to it. I boosted it with a TC Electronics Spark which sounded cool but was pretty noisey , then boosted it with a Tone Freak Naked OD , sounded quieter , much better as that OD doesn't get nearly as compressed as the TC. Pretty impressive how open and organic the BE channel sounds. I only had about an hour to play while my wife in kid were out so I haven`t dialed in the Plexi channel yet. So far I really like this amp , i wouldn't say I`m in love yet but It might just take some more time for my ears to get used to it cause as I said I only had about an hour jamming on it .

Turn the gain up all the way! The amp really start to shine once the master gets around 4. The bass also has a huge impact on the sound and feel don't be afraid to get it up to around 7-10.

So it`s not just me , the 5150 has gobs more gain the SB ? Thanks for advice , I`ll to some tweaking

Yeah ch 3 had an insane amount of gain. Ch two really does not have that much more gain than the small box I just starts to sound like shot once you pass a certain point. The small box sounds great maxed
