I have a question for those of you with rig experience...
I'm working on my setup for playing live and I want to use my Herbert as the dry side of a wet/dry rig. I really don't want to do anything to pollute the tone of the Herbert (through a Bogner 4x12) as I am really happy with the tones on all three channels. So I would like to split off the signal and run it through a second amp where I will apply effects.
I've done some experimenting using the Herbert's Compensated out into (gasp) a Line 6 POD which is then routed into a Stereo VHT Two-Fifty-Two power amp, and then into the biamped 4 Ohm inputs of a Mesa 4x12 cabinet. The clean sounds are actually terrific and I think the VHT power amp really softens up the harshness of the POD XT. However for any sounds that use distortion ( I'm using overdrive from the Herbert of course and not from the POD) the POD/VHT side of the rig gets mushy and a little indistinct.
One nice thing about this setup is that I can use the footcontroller of the POD to channel switch the Herbert while at the same time adding some reverb for playing leads, chorus for clean picking, etc.
I'm open to getting new gear to spruce up the tone on the wet side, but before I can do that I guess I really need to identify if the Compensated out is appropriate for this, or if I need to buy another device to go between the Herbert and my dry cab to split the signal off in the same way that EVH, Satriani, etc do it.
I would appreciate any thoughts you guys might have about how to grow and improve my rig, especially advice on what not to do!
Thanks,
Paul
