Is Hagen the amp for me?

I was researching amps and found the Diezel Hagen but from the limited number of videos and soundclips I'm not sure what it can do. I love some of what I heard but I don't like some either, but I can't tell if it is the video (or clip), just the way they had it dialed in, or the amp itself. What I want to ask is if it is good for progressive rock/metal. I'm thinking of music like Opeth, Haken (probably my favorite band in this list), Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Pink Floyd, and bands similar to those. I also want to do progressive/ambient/experimental type music, which I know will require effects but I want to know if the amp will sound good for those things. From what I've heard it's either really chuggy with a fat, loose tone, AC/DC-ish, or jazzy with a slappy-bass like tone; so because of that this amp may actually be far from what I'm hoping it to be. I'm just asking because all the high praise I'm reading is telling me this is the amp to get, they just don't say for what style really. Any information about the Hagen for this type of music or any other amp (Diezel or otherwise) that you would recommend for this would be really awesome. And as far as I know there are no Hagens in my area to try out myself. Thank you!

Feel good look into the Rhodes Gemini if you really want verstitility in gain structure this amp will blow your mind !

It's a fine amp, m'man... Differently voiced that the VH4, has a little bit of the spank and sparkle of the Herbert, but with the "thud" of VH4s channel 3 and the Hagen's Ch.4 is quite diverse.

I'd say test drive one - or - buy a used one from the member classifieds (a reputable seller might I add) and know that the glass is good, and the amp running right. Once you get it into yer hands, you'll know. If not? Resell shouldn't be a problem.

I've got both (VH4 and Hagen) and love them both - but they are definitely different animals.

Just going by what you said in the first few sentences, I would say no, it's not for you. What are you playing right now?

I tried a hagan but it was only for a short period and i really wanna try it again. I love the herbert and vh4 and own both. So im really curious if it would make sense to get a hagan. I also thought about the dmoll but im thinking i dont really need it if i already have the herbert. So the hagan might be a better choice. I really liked the clean ch when i played the hagan and i tried ch3 or 4 but i cant remember which. The cab had gt75 and i think that was a bad match and part of the reason i wasnt super impressed.

I owned a Hagen. Its a fine amp. BUT to me its like a family with two sisters a year apart. The older one is a 10 while the younger one is a 9. With the Diezel familiy the VH4 is the "10". Ask her out first...

Rezza, I watched your vid and was shocked to see you boosting your Hagen after you called me out for doing that. Change of heart? :)

Would it be silly to buy a hagan if i already have the vh4 and herbert. Can it be justified or will i end up selling it off because its too close to what i already have. I dont mind owning multiple amps if they have different tones but i dont want amps that are too close to sounding the same.

From what you said, especially with liking Pink Floyd to go with the heavy stuff, I think Fryette's Sig:X or UL would be a better fit TBQH. The cleans definitely go more along the Hiwatt path which is the signature for Pink Floyd, while the drive channels are extremely versatile. I prefer the Sig:X myself but I'm probably in the minority with that opinion.

I tried the Hagen and honestly thought the Einstein I tried had better sounds in it, even if the Hagen had more channels. Neither amp truly impressed me though. Never tried a VH4 but have heard it on enough recordings to know it's awesome, at least in the right hands.

IMO yes. To me Ch3 of the Hagen is just a greasier version of the VH4. Ch 4 of the older VH4 I had was useless, waaaay too gainy. Now its perfect. I missed the VH4 after I sold it then got another. Haven't missed the Hagen. Not even a little.

I prefer channel 4 of the Hagen for leads, but for anything else, the VH4 destroys it. It's just tighter, more aggressive, and has a lot less wool to the low end. The Hagen always sounded like how Bogner would build a VH4 to me. Not bad, and for some things, it might work really well, but for metal, it was just really mediocre. Especially with a downtuned 7. Which is disappointing considering how the VH4 is one of the best 7 string amps ever...

Well said. Now, even ch4 on the VH4 is waaay usable vs. before.

So should i check out the dmoll instead or is it too much like the herbert.

I think the latest VH4 I've played was from 2006. Really should try to find a more recent one. Anyone wanna trade a 100B for a 2013 VH4?

here's a video I made of the hagen at the local music store some weeks ago. For some reason it came up upside down, but you just wanna listen to the amp not see me lol

The sound lacks brightness because the cab was pointing another direction, but the tone is very clear imo.

The guitar was an LTD Hetfield Snakebyte

I really liked the Hagen when I tried it. I think even more so than the VH4 because it has a bit more saturation which I've discovered that I like for metal/hard rock tones.

The VH4 is a masterpiece but the Hagen I think is a great amp

I used to have a Hagen too. Still have a VH4. IMO if you have a Herbert and a VH4, and are primarily interested in high gain, you've got the best Diezel has to offer. Everything else is just a variation on those 2.

I should've shown you guys what sound I was looking for so that you could make better suggestions, I really like the guitar tones these guys have.

I know they use effects a lot but the tone is still there when they play distorted and cleaner. That's the main sound (tone) I want. It has to have great cleans (with the ability to add a bit of crunch sometimes), but awesome distortion when needed. I might get into death metal territory every once in a while (though it won't be much and that won't be a primary focus).

A few other tones I like:

The heaviness I'd like. I couldn't find a good video to display it but this is decent enough to show the idea.

Sorry for so many videos, it is hard to get my tone across. If you watched them all (if I even posted them right for you to watch haha) I thank you, and if you have an amp idea in mind just post it. Thank you for all the input I appreciate it.

I like the tone in that video, very metal.

thank you. I think it sounds great too, I was gladly surprised with the Hagen (I though it was gonna be a watered down VH4, but it's not.

I think the Hagen would be the amp for the OPs tones.
