I'm looking for a reasonable reliable slave power amp for my setup. I have heard some decent clips of the new V300. I am also interested in the old MV-962 Mosvalve but an amp going on 10-15 years old some of the components might been failing in an old Mosvalve amp, ie filter caps.

I know Psychodave used to use a DCM150 and a MV-962 and I think I would be happy with the tone that I have heard, just curious about this V300?

id also kill to own a MV-962 or even better a MV-942, its one of my favorite tones that dave has had right up there with his H&H V800 he uses now (has a sweeter character). the MV series was supposed to offer tube-like tone with a tonestack, but with mosfet's instead of tubes. from what i have spoken with dave - they have insane amounts of punch and headroom. i do know that dave owned an EL34 marshall 100/100 at some point and used the MV-962 instead. i believe his main reason was the marshall was just too fucking loud - hopefully he will chime in here and kinda give us a comparison?

but both the MV series amplifiers and the H&H's are rare that aldrich, and dave use. tubeworks is out of business - now owned by genz-benz. and they arent releasing anything simillar.

i am toying releasing an updated version of the MV 942 power amplifier out of my own company with my own design. still researching and designing.

im not sure if you are looking to stay solid state, but if you like the MV series and arent looking to spend alot of money - id recommend the peavey classic 120/120 - seriously overrated and they have alot to offer for the money for a tube poweramplifier. you can also use it in 120W/120W mono mode for a total of 240W out of one channel if you want - a feature not in the classic 50/50 or classic 50 models. i cant speak for the rocktron V300.

a few others to look out for would be randall power amplifiers and a mesa 2:90 IMHO.

I kinda want to stay away from a tube power amp, I have enough tube amps in my stable that need tube maintnenance. I used to own last of the Mosvalves an 1160 model I think and that amp sounded decent but it blew up twice while I owned it, it had some issues.

I have read the MV-962 the original BK butler amp was alot better than the later Mosvalve models.

The single rack space V300 has my interest at the moment as it has some features that supposedly give it tube like character like the Mosvalve. If it has decent punch the 150 watts into 8 ohms per channel seems more than enough for what I want to do.

I think I'm going to snag a MV-962 and pick up a V300 and see which one wins. The Carvin DCM are supposed to be decent too, but I had some functionality issues with a DCM600 I owned a couple of years ago so Carvin is kind of iffy with me for quality.

yeah i really dont blame you for a power-amp wanting to stay solid state. im still looking for a few poweramps that are solid state myself - if you get the poweramps relatively soon keep in touch and bump the thread - ill subscribe to it. would like to hear what you have to say.

Thanks for posting your experiences with the MV-962 Dave, I've liked the tones you have gotten in your clips with the DCM and MV. I had a chance to pick up an H&H400 some time ago but I held back mainly due to knowing parts are impossible to find for them if they have issues.

The mosvalves seem to pop up every now and then. The new V300 has some reactance knob that is supposdely to add to the tubelike character of the Rocktron as well as a definition knob(ie:presence). From alot of the clips of guys using them a power amp for Axe/FX and Eleven rack the power amp seems to punch fairly well.

So I guess I'll place my order for one today and use my 45 day money back guarrantee. We'll see? :gethim:

Ralph (Gainfreak) has the new Velocity 300 Poweramp so shoot him a PM if he doesn't chime into this thread :)

i have the mosvalve 982 1 space power amp. 80watts x2 at 4 ohms per side stereo.
or 160 at 8 bridged

i ran each side to a 4 ohm 4x12, both volumes dimed, presence suited to each different room as needed.
and my preamp volume never went above 4. PLENTY loud. wayyyy fast response rate. thick, clear sound.

PLENTY loud.

i also owned the 942 mosvalve 500....and regret selling it cheap. it was RETARDED loud, clean and clear. low maintainence on both amps btw.

wonder if my 982 needs recapped, serviced, etc. or should i leave well enough alone. it seems to have lost some punch over the years...

I just bought a MV-962 so we'll see what it sounds like compared to my old 1160. I 'm still not ruling out the Rocktron V300 it looks pretty good and one rack space too.

Filter caps can last indefinitley with regular use unless they breakdown, become electrically leaky or actually lose their electrolite. I know of vintage amps with 40 years old caps that are just fine and others that fail after 10-15 years it just depends.

i remember the velocity series power amps in the mid/late 90's marketing the fact that the "slew" rate was really high.

i imagine they meant responsiveness...i played through one of those live at a gig...through a gainiac...it felt really fast, and greasy..if that makes sense...but didn't SOUND loud or big..but that could've been any number of variables of unknowns.
