I don’t know what Friedman modded Marshall’s go for these days, but I will agree with him that it should sound more raw and organic than his production amps based on the HBE/BE modded ‘78 SuperLead I had. Still though for $3800 there are many other amps I’d choose over it

But then you’d have a used BE. It doesn’t seem out of line for a CL asking price. I can’t tell what type of loop it is though.

I was watching some Friedman-modded SLPs on Reverb and they had sold between $2300-3000. Don't think they had as many mods though. Price doesn't seem bad.

no pics of the inside though eh ?? I would want to see what kind of shape the inside looks like .

I'll provide a negativity filled counterpoint: That ain't modded, it's butchered. Nice computer fan in the side. That looks like total dog crap. If some no name had done that work people would join me with invective but it's Friedman so break out the glad hand..How to ruin a nice amp.

I bet it sounds killer. I’ve seen them go for this price before.
Yep.

That fan has probably been there for years; it was a crap 'mod' to keep the tubes cool. Ugh. But when you consider it's a vintage Marshall with great transformers, so the modding platform is fantastic, then modded by Friedman I'd say 3-4k is ballpark when Camerons go for 4K+.
I'd take that amp every day and 5 times on Sunday over a Friedman build, no offense meant.

That's my thoughts as well. The fan had to be somebody else's hack job. I don't think Friedman would go that route.

Anything could be possible. Some former owner could've hacked it when it wasn't "vintage" just "used" and someone else could've gotten it cheap and had actual decent mods done. I noticed it's Tampa and Tampa/St. Pete has the most serious, hard core, dedicated metal people I have ever met in my life so I have the feeling that thing is a good sounding amp for heavy music regardless. I wouldn't pay that for it, I like more traditional stuff, but it might be a good deal for another guy.

Yup--I hate to tell you how many Marshall Amps I came across 40 years ago that had fans in the side of them. People forget mods weren't the norm back then . Guys ran 4 holer amps wide open with potentiometers and all kinds of gadgets to decrease the volume . The tubes were red hot , tolex burned off and ready to catch fire BUT man did some of those amps sound good !!!!

Damn --do I miss those days!! Maybe Greazygeo will jump in here

Right…the”consciousness expanding” led to the awareness that extreme operation yields inspiring tone. The party, shows, love, the EVENT held highest value and thus the ends justified the means.

At the time it made sense!

38-fuck no-Hundred. When Dave was still doing the Kitchen Sink mod to Marshall’s, he quoted me about $800 for it. If you think a ’74 in that shape is worth 3K, that’s on you. Personally, I would get a kit NMV Marshall, then have one of a few modders who know how to install the same stuff, mod that. Or, make it a fun project to try some mods myself.
If I had my heart set on getting an amp in that range I’d be looking at SLO’s or even cheaper, a Suhr SL67 and hit it with some pedals. Hell, I might even go whole hog and just get a Pandora Ecstasy.
3800 is what I would entertain for an original iron, clean, un-modded ‘70/’71. (But, not really..?)

Well, at this point I've heard 10 'builds' with good Merren, Classictone, Mercury, Heyboer, you name it and EVERY time a real Marshall stomps it for tone. Every time. Maybe to you or others it's only a 10% difference, but to me (and the others who heard it at an amp fest) that 10% makes all the difference in the world. The donor amp matters, in any mod. Big time.
3800 for a beat up 74 SL with a Friedman mod? Maybe, maybe not. But while the prices are coming down for some things, others seem to be staying high.
If you want an unmodded stock original 70-73 SL? You'd be lucky to get it for 3800. Those are staying at 4-5K. I know I wouldn't let my 72 Trem go for less than 5K. Good luck finding another.

I think you might have to be older to appreciate and understand cobbed up Marshalls. All this new shit we rave about on this forum didn't exist 25 years ago and all the younger guys think it's the bitches whip . I've owned some of these amps and while they may function flawlessly they have huge price tags also but they are completely souless and uninspiring . Stand in front of a stack of beat up Marshalls running wide open (even in your basement) and get back to me .
