Issue with Engl Screamer

I just bought a used Screamer 50, and I'm having an issue. I played a gig with it Saturday, and I had to run it really high, about 7, to keep up. This was just a small bar gig, maybe 200 people, and the other guitar player had his Mesa Nomad 55 on 2 or 3.

Is this just old power tubes, a weak pre-amp tube, or is this amp just not going to produce the volume a 50 watter should?

Hi , I have a load of 50 watt and 100 watt amps and the 1x12 Engl Screamer is 1 that I own . Mine is relatively loud. I like using a 1x12 extension cabinet with it also , but I'm not sure if yours is the HEAD or COMBO. . Anyway , You do realize of course there's a MASTER volume as well as the LEAD CHANNEL Volume . . What was each of those set at ?

I have the head going into an 8 ohm Avatar 2X12 with Eminance Red Coats. The clean gain was set to about 2 o'clock, lead gain around 12, lead volume at 2:30, master at 3.

You mean Master at 3:00 right ,not '3' out of '10' right? IF SO , both the master and and leave volume at those settings should be putting out definitely a decent amount of volume! If the Master's on 3 though , NO WAY , as you'd need to turn it up

In relation to other amps, if you're comparing this to a JCM800 2204 type amp , the JCM800 is way louder. It's about the loudest 50 watt amp made. But in comparison to other Jcm900 Marshalls, or or even the 30th anniversary Marshalls, etc the ENgl Screamer is similar.

I'm also assuming your Avatar cab with the Red Coats worked at the 'right volumes' with any other 8 ohm head going into it right? Definitely want to rule out any problem with the cabinet.

ALSO , are you using the volume boost feature (Via footswitch) . . when the volume boost is kicked in is it a HUGE boost? You have that little pot on the back that you want to dial to the best volume for you

ALSO , Don't know if you're using your fx loop , but if you are, do you have enough return level coming back in ?

You're correct, master at 3:00.

Comparing to a Mesa 55 watt combo and my 40 watt Fender HRD.

I've used the cab with an Egnater Rebel 30, and that didn't have any issues.

I am using the Engl controller for the VLS function, and it's giving about the boost I expected.

Nothing in the loop.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bummer, wish I could help , but next you're either looking at potential intermittency in the vls/boost jack , or possibly even the series loop jax even though they're not being used. . To check that out just get a 1/4" cable and plug it in /take it out a few times to make sure there's not a bad contact in either of those. IF NOT that, then tubes potentially ,but in all my travels (i have over 25 amps!) it's pretty odd that an amp will ONLY suffer from loss of volume with a bad tube. It CAN THOUGH , but typically you'll find loss of volume and bad sound! This amp should definitely be as loud as the HRD though. GOod luck I'm curious what happens.
