James Hetfield signature EMG's

God dammit. Why did he say "clarity and punch of passive pickup in the fat wall of sound of an active 81". I've been through EMGs in almost every guitar I own, 81/85/60/HZs(lol) you name it. I always thought they were some of the clearest/tightest pickups out there next to certain passives, however I've had to revert to 85's in the bridge because the 81 doesn't have that "punch", so I kinda feel what James is saying. I really hope these are good, because I'm GASing sooo hard

85 in the bridge FTW. That's what I used in LP's for years.

I REALLY want to try these. I'm using the Blackouts now, but I don't really like them compared to the 81. They're lacking that bite and snarl that the 81 has. If these really retain the bite and snarl of an 81, with the warmth and roundness of a passive, call me sold.

i totally agree. i have swapped the 85 into the bridge of every guitar i have ever owned with an emg 81/85 set. i had an esp ec401 with emg 85's in both spots and loved that tone

Always disliked the 85 in the bridge. Not even really a fan of it in the neck either. Always sounded too bloated on the bottom end.

Got em,love them,in my 1984 Explorer,alder wood.Hetfield replica,not the reissue.
They sound clear like the 81,they have nice attack, but the thing i like the most is
they don't have the thinness of the 81,and they sound wide open and not compressed.
And the mad tight crunch is fluid, the GB and E strings sound more full when soloing.
And they look great,i'll take a pic when it comes back, getting a re-fret.

How much you want for them?  Have you tried them with the 18v mod at all?

nice pickups, i have them in my silverburst les paul custom.

nothing against the pups, as I haven't heard them yet

...but I just watched 8mins of video, and no sound clips? at least compare them to 81s or something

bare knuckles have had covers. for a while. vintage looking ones.

Bit disappointing to see James Hetfield do a commercial though, even if it is for his "own" pickup. Part of why I loved Metallica as a teen was the all black, no labels, no bullshit, no compromise and no commercial attitude.

But since he's been using EMG pickups, I guess it had to come one day... At least it's not as bizar as John Cleese doing a commercial for an electronics chain in Finland.

Have you missed his ESP endorsements that he's done for the past 30 years?

could be active if you wanted. Duncan has a preamp made to work with passives! i've got the preamp, but haven't tried it yet.

ya, my point exactly

the video is an 8 minute long commercial for merchandise that sounds a certain way,
but you never get to hear the merchandise. so, all that's left is the fact that they have
covers, which is absolutely nothing new.

BTW, for the most part I hate advertising

Yeah, but that apparently makes them sound 90% Blackouts and 10% original pups. It would be a waste to get some expensive boutique pups like Bare Knuckles and then slap the Blackout Preamp on them.
