In 1990, Jason Becker was rapidly ascending the heights of guitar stardom. The 21-year-old had already released two Cacophony albums with co-guitarist Marty Friedman – Shrapnel Records’ Go Off! and Speed Metal Symphony – and well as his acclaimed 1989 solo album, Perpetual Burn. Most notable of all, Jason had just completed the sessions for David Lee Roth’s A Little Ain’t Enough, making him the third guitarist – after Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai – to play alongside Roth. Fans were anxiously anticipating Roth’s upcoming tour with Jason on guitar, but this was not to be. Jason had just been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A few days after his diagnosis, Jason and I did an extensive interview about the Dave Lee Roth sessions, Marty Friedman and Cacophony, his views on guitars and Marshall amps, his musical upbringing, and more. In fact, Jason didn’t even mention his illness until the last moments of the interview. Bits of this conversation were used for a profile I wrote for Guitar Player magazine twenty years ago, but the complete interview has never been transcribed until now. With Jason’s approval, I’ve just posted the complete conversation here: http://jasobrecht.com/jason-becker-complete-1990-interview-david-lee-roth-cacophony-2/
