I'm considering picking up an early 80's, vertical input, JCM 800 2x12 combo. Is it similar to the head version (build, tone)? I haven't heard much about them.

It is exact in build and tone but it could be the version with reverb and two channels which is less desirable. But still good.

Should be the exact same circuit as the head. I think it's the same chassis and everything, just with the markings screen printed upside down.

I have a 4010, which is a 1x12 version of the 2204. It's chassis is smaller than the heads and 2x12s. And I know there's an extra cap across the mid pot, I think to bleed off high end to make the open-back 1x12 sound warmer/thumpier. It sounds great on its own and RAWKS when plugged into my 4x12 with G12-65s.

Just watch out: some vertical input combos used the G12M-70 speaker. They don't all have the G12-65.

Thanks for the input guys.

I was also wondering about the weight. I had a 5150 combo that was a PITA (and back) to constantly lug around. I'm guessing this amp probably weighs about the same.

No should be lighter.. my 1x12 combo is def fairly easy to move around. Love the amp. The combos are sleepers!

JCM 800 2x12 shouldn't be as heavy as the 5150 because the 5150 made efforts to seal the speaker cavity. It'll still be pretty heavy, though. I'm really happy with the 1x12 4010 (because it's very easy to move and if I want more speakers can just use more cab), but they don't seem to turn up as often.

I had the 2X12 model. My god it was incredibly heavy. So much so I'd rather carry a head and 4x12. Great amps though!

When I was a kid I used to frequent a music store in Flint, Mi. For months there was a white, single channel, vertical input JCM800 2x12 combo in there.
As I recall from distant memory, it was some of the creamiest, ballsy rock tone I've ever had.
I didn't have the money so I couldn't buy it, but I remember it to this day.
I went in there to play it every Satuday until it was gone. :aww:

Didn't those have an issue with getting extra hot? Maybe I'm thinking of a different Marshall.

Never had that problem with mine .. it is the 4010. I think it is recommended that certain preamp tube types are not used because of how they rattle from being in the same cab as the speaker but that is it.

The Marshall DSL401 and 6101LE I had both got very hot. I was put off owning Marshall combos after owning them, but the 112 2channel JCM800 I worked on a few years ago, didn't run too hot. It sounded pretty good, though the internal G12M70 was holding it back. I really liked it through my jubilee 212 with WGS ET-65's, worked great with a boost.

I had the 4010 back in the late 80s. I ran a yellow Boss Super Overdrive into it. Amazing.

One of the best amps I've ever owned. Esp loaded with vintage 30's. The CMII boost works well with it and they can be had for $40 used.

I got rid of mine only to get the head version. here is a clip

That was boosted with a RAT. I could not tell the difference between the head and the combo via the same 4x12 cab but they were never in the same room etc.

I bought this 1981 4104 on Ebay, it showed up with a horrible mod, some one had tried to make it a non master volume plexi style mod, I was pissed because the description said nothing about a mod plus it was a first year JCM 800, he wanted me to send it back for a refund which was totaly cool, but I said I still want the amp, just give me back a few bucks $100.00 to be exact and my good friend Brian put his magic in it and it absolutely kicks fucking ass, awesome amp

P.S. if this had come stock I wouldn't have modded it

Ok well, the amp sold locally. Kind of pissed, it was a great deal at only $700 and was in great condition. It sucks, had to work all day and got home late. I guess at that price you have to jump on it immediately. I guess I'm on a quest now since I really got myself syked up for one.

I think I texted that same guy today. I don't even really want it (I have a glorious sounding 4010) but at $700 it's hard to say no. Guess we both missed it.
