interesting, on the third example too close to make a clear difference, how much the retro valves sell for?

tube1: retro high gain
tube2: jj
tube3: tung sol
tube4: ehx
tube5: retro low

I appreciate the effort, but just 1 tube IMO isn't a fair comparison. Running all RV's would give a better real life representation of how good they are.

That said, I'm all for it. Technology marches on. If you could replicate the feel of old vintage tubes without the price, I think that would be great.

I can also appreciate your comment however I only have two and they're not cheap so figured V1 would be an interesting comparison

Tube difference is is there. Not sure which is which. Just like any tube swap, it is subjective.

i appreciate the time and effort for you doing this.

however i would recommend that you re-amp instead.

this would take out the variables of your playing.

especially on the cleans where how hard you pick and your technique can make the same passage sound different even if you didnt change the tubes.

yes, or use a looper pedal.... something that keeps the phrase replicated perfectly.

great video, i can't figure out which is which, which....just goes to show ya!

i also do think preamp tubes are also a "feel" thing just as much as a "hear" thing.

I hate vids that want me to guess. Please just do the demo with full disclosure. I can't tell a whole lot of difference between the clips, so now what? All guessing does is make me look stupid. Nice job. I don't need help looking stupid.

#3 sounded like one of the retro valves. not sure which. probably the hotter one.

I liked #2 the most, but not by much over the other 4.

haha certainly not trying to make anyone look or feel stupid, just thought it would be a fun thing to do before I do my full demo of the amber and blue :)

I'm going with 1 and 5 are the retros. I don't think it would matter a whole lot, particularly on the distorted tones. Pretty cool.

And I appreciate your efforts, I just need the reveal.

Ok so here is the order:

Tube 1: JJ
Tube 2: Retro Amber
Tube 3: EHX
Tube 4: Retro Blue
Tube 5: Tung Sol

My favourite is the EHX although for distortion the Retro Amber sounds and feels really nice

burn =0 good stuff, i liked tube 1 for the cleans tbh, gainy stuff was a different matter, i'm not too sure on the point then if it doesn't offer that much more gain than a standard tube (it's one of the selling points right? outside of the microphonics/typical tube problems), what did you think while playing it?

I don't have the red which is the high gain version but they react just like tubes when you play and in the room I noticed the mid range was a little more scooped with the RV's. I think the point of them is just that if you can't notice the difference and you gig a lot they are more reliable. I'd like to see what RV's sound like in all preamp positions compared to tubes. Also look forward to testing RV power tubes once they come out.

I like #2 cleans. I thought all the crunch sounded very close.
