Joe Bonamassa 'Different Shades of Blue" new album

Awesome! Man, his vocals sound really good in that vid. I dig the guitar tone too. :rock:

Great performance. Joe is great.

The song was uninspiring to me......love the guy though.
 
I used to be a big fan, but honestly, I was pretty bored by that. I feel like I've heard him do that same song 5 times already. I just don't find it interesting anymore. I don't begrudge him his success. Few in the industry work harder, but seriously, "Different Shades of Blue" when you own a few '59 Les Pauls, a BMW, and a place in Malibu? Remember when he would play in like 5 different styles on the same album? His strength was always arranging more obscure songs and making them his own too.

Yeah, we've said it all before. I'm glad for his success, but it all sounds the same to me now. I wish him the best.
I won't be buying any of his stuff from here on. Too bad.

Also, I blame most of this on Kevin Shirley. If Joe can get away from that guy, I might be interested.

Ditto. I also find Shirley incredibly annoying.
 
I have not bought anything of his in years. He is a killer player, but his songs lack something for me. Its almost like it is easy listening to me. Weird.
 
I've never been a fan of his songwriting but I've always liked JB's tone and playing. I've listened DSoB 3 times today and honestly I just don't dig the song. The playing at around 3 min is great, too bad there wasn't more of it in the song.

To be fair, I consider the blues genre one of the hardest to exist in today. Everything strictly pentatonic has been done and gets old quick. Without proficiency in other modes and the ability to tastefully incorporate them, you're just rehashing what's already been done a million times before.
 
I don't know Bonamassa's entire music catalog, but I liked this song. If this cut is like the rest of the cd, I see it as a progression compared to his earlier work. His tone is always amazing too.

Agreed. To me this cut does seem to be a bit of a progression compared to his earlier work. I think his vocals are improving and I like the tone a bit better...sounds clearer.
 
Ugh, this is so boring. I can't believe he already has a new album out. The last one "Driving Towards Daylight" seems like it is still new, It got one spin from me and I haven't listened to it again because it's the same middle of the road dreck.

I never heard of him till he joined Black Country Communion, then his career took off after that because I think he gained a lot of hard rock fans like me who had never heard of him while hiding in the blues realm. Things took a turn for the worse with Glenn Hughes, and I guess Joe wanted to get back to his solo career, but his albums since his BCC stint are very forgettable. Nothing like his earlier John Henry or Sloe Gin albums which I really like. As for Shirley, he lost me after that no mastering for Iron Maiden debacle... (maybe that was Steve Harris' fault..)

I don't see any reason why this cut wouldn't get country radio play... not really my thing but I do dig JB.
 
Love Joe Bonamassa!! Prefer the older stuff. You & Me is my favorite CD by him!!! Love the old Bloodline stuff too!!

Saw a concert on Palladia recently of his where he played 4 different venues. One of them was a club and he just had a Jubilee behind him and a small pedalboard. To me it sounded just as good as the wall of unobtanium amps he uses for the big places.
 
The new CD will be the first solo CD from Joe that is all originals. Jonathan Cain, Journey, co-wrote some of the tunes. I don't guys, I hear something different going on with the vid that I like. I'm pretty interested in what the rest of the CD is going to sound like.
 
I'm hoping he'll do well, but I miss the more rockier type stuff. This is just too easy listening, and like someone said earlier, something you might hear driving along at 3pm with a country station on.
I saw him live last year, and it was great, but I didn't like how he started the show with several acoustic songs, it kind of sucked all the energy for me in the beginning. He smoked later on though, doing his little medley of hard rock riffs like Still of the Night. :rock:
 
To me, this new album is different than the last two. But, both Dust Bowl and Driving Towards the Daylight are 2 of my top 4 favorite albums of his. The other two being Sloe Gin and the debut album.

While I like his older albums, I dig the more atmospheric albums with the backwoods swagger more than the wanking with the clean sound. The more cleaner sound from his earlier work does not sound very bluesy to me.

As for the new album... Like I said, I think it's a bit different. The songs are mostly shorter and more uptempo. Probably not what you guys want, but most of the songs are not as slow as the title track.

I love Joe & he's one of my favorite players, but Kevin Shirley is just dragging him down now. His production & recording style is so bland & homogenized & he's dragging Joe into a white bread territory. But then again, Joe's getting more successful every year, so what the hell do I know...

I think there is some different stuff on here. There is a Ray Charles type of R&B song, there is an uptempo kind of R&B song... "Oh Beautiful!" sounds like a 70's tune. The title track does sound like some of the stuff he has done recently.

I don't think you understand the meaning of the title of the album:

This is Bonamassa’s first studio album in two years and the first album of his career to feature all original material. The result is a record with more of an experimental edge than previous Bonamassa records. It’s a blues record that explores the outer reaches and the many different sounds that shape the genre. “It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in the writing on an entire album. So I decided I wanted to make a completely original blues album,” said Bonamassa. “I’ve really had to push myself to make everything I do better than the last project. I know the fans expect it. Clearly, Joe about the album now and how the album works as a whole instead of a bunch of tunes just thrown on a CD. When you have made this many albums stuff is going to start to sound familiar.
