Joe was a smoking guitarist back in the day! Brad Whitford has a more "schooled" polished technique, but Joe Perry was the f****** man! After the collapse of his Joe Perry Project, he was never the same. I recall a Circus magazine interview where Joe says; "I wish I could remember what it was I use to know." These days, I can't listen to anything past the Night In A Rut album. Live? forget it... can't do it.

Here's Joe carrying the entire show as a single guitar unit. Awesome! His chops are absolute perfection, and his tone is text-book Joe for that era. He should never have sold his Andy Topeka modified Music Man heads. Losing Ralph Morman killed the band, not question about it. I can do without Joe's vocal stylings.

Sorry, I like Joe’s tunes but he’s never been a great player. Never. I saw Hollywood Vampires live... big fucking mistake. Awful.

I dunno what he's up to lately but man peak Joe Perry was a monster player. Killer groove and vibe.

You know what they say about Hollywood Vampires?

They suck...

But doesn’t he have that awesome interplay with Johnny Depp?

Hey you guys can make fun of those other two but don't say crap about Alice "the Coop" Cooper. I saw a show last year and he was still kicking everyone's ass in the audience. That guy might look old but he is a rocker thru and thru and still brings it.

Alice still brings it. It must be sobriety and golf even though I don’t think he’s golfing that much anymore.

Bingo. Since when was Perry great? Henderix, Clapton, Page, Blackmore... those are some great players. Not Joe Perry.

Joe hasn’t been great for several decades now. Whitford has always been the better guitar player, in my opinion.

I think Joe used to be awesome. Such a unique style and for a long time he was laying it down with the best of the blues/hard rock players. Plus he got some really great tones, especially in the late 80’s and 90’s when they had come back bigger than ever.

For fucks sake, didn’t Dick Wagner and other studio guys play all the good Aerosmith solos back in the day anyway ??? EVH said it best.., “He lacks feel”, that sums it up pretty much.

What a rube.  If there's anyone who lacks "feel", it's EVH.

I like Joe, but I don't think he's a technically 'good' player. The two aren't mutually exclusive in my book - Page isn't a good player either but one of my faves.

LMFAO !!! EVH lacks feel !!! Wow...MILLIONS of people that picked up the guitar in the 80s MUST be wrong, but YOU are right ! Jagoff

I guess style doesn't matter much anymore in a youtube world where everyone rigidly equates skill to talent.

I remember coming home from football practice at like 11 yrs old and the radio played a brand new song (Walk This Way) from Aerosmith's brand new album TITA. I thought it was the greatest hook ever. I still love that record and Rocks too and certain songs from earlier records (certainly Train and that awesome solo...that JP didn't play) but that was about it. When I learned about the Hunter/Wagner thing I was both pissed and crushed. And I was done. They did make a helluva comeback tho so props to them for that.

I would argue , what makes a guitar player “great” ? Is it technical prowess , or is it writing songs , riffs , and solos that stand the test of time? Personally, I will take a Mick Mars or Kirk Hammett solo over anything that Yngwie has ever done. Yngwie is a guitar master , but I can’t sing his guitar solos. They don’t plant themselves in my brain. Just my opinion of course
