Joe Satriani's lawyers are planning to follow Coldplay around until the band accepts a writ for ripping off one of his songs...

Satch's legal team even intends to dog Chris Martin and Co at this Sunday's Grammy Awards. And in an even greater gesture of defiance they even plan to film the whole thing!

As previously reported in TG, you may remember Satch claiming in December that Coldplay had copied the melody from his instrumental anthem 'If I Could Fly' on their 2008 single 'Viva La Vida'. Coldplay have strenuously denied this, claiming any similarities between the two tracks are purely coincidental.

Satch obviously isn't taking this lying down, and has instructed his lawyer Howard King to hire a team to "dog the band everywhere they go" in order to personally serve them legal papers demanding they answer for what they've done.

It's like when as a child you used to poke your younger brother or sister repeatedly in the shoulder until they admitted you were the greatest.

"We have warned their British lawyers that we have hired a fleet of process servers lined up to dog the band everywhere they go this weekend in the hope of serving them," said King.

Coldplay drummer Will Champion recently spoke about the situation, saying the band found it "annoying".

I mean I really hate Coldplay and really like Satriani, but I don't see the point

It is pretty obvious to me they (Coldplay) ripped off Joe. Check it out here and tell me if I am wrong?

I completely agree. There was a video on Youtube (that's now removed, how funny) where the two songs were going at the same time and it's really obvious. What I don't understand is how tactics ''dog the band everywhere they go'' will help prove that

From what I understand, They (Satrianis Lawyers) were trying to serve the band with a lawsuit but the Management kept them from the process servers. Satianis lawyer had said he would have a host of process servers on hand to serve the band at the Grammys. They changed their mind on Friday and decided it would be best to let the band win a bunch of Grammys for Satrianis claimed plagiarized song Viva La Vida which would prove to drive the settlement or judgement value up when the time came.

From what I here the singer of CP is a little fucking prick so get him Joe

Screw that little prick from coldplay. its a direct rip off, now own up to your mistake, pay Satch for boosting his work, and man up :gethim: :gethim: :gethim:

I can't stand the über-moral pretentious far-left pop-music wankers of Coldplay – that's just personal opinion ofcourse – but anyway, I doubt they can admit to anything without loosing their better-than-thou moral-superiority high-ground, so I don't expect this to go anywhere except for perhaps into a very drawn out legal battle.

Satriani has probably received more exposure (and airplay) beyond his trusted fanbase already because of this case, so I think in the end it all doesn't matter much.

They didn't rip him off, at all. And he will lose in court. It's 1 melody, in one intro of a song that is very similar in many other songs. It's almost the same melody as that Santana/Michelle Branch song too.

I agree. It's not a direct ripoff. The verse from the Coldplay song songs like the Chorus of the Satch song. And the Chorus from the Codplay song and verse from the Satch song are completely different.

If artists are going to continue to fire up lawsuits at eachother then strap yourself in. I mean, how many Death Metal songs all sound the same

And if Page and Plant didn't sue Kingdom Clone then nobody else deserves to sue anyone.

Exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've written a chorus or verse, record it as an idea, then 2 weeks later hear something that sounds kind of similar. It happens all the time, anyone who writes music has experienced it.

I can 100% guarantee you that Coldplay is not listening to Satriani for musical inspiration.

Some melodies, on top of certain chord progressions, just make sense, and fit well. Coldplay AND satch probably laid down the chord progression (which is in different keys, mind you), and just gravitated towards that melody because it made sense.

And it's not a direct copy. These side-by-sides on youtube are lame. The first few notes are the same, sure. Then the melodies clearly deviate from one another.

Ripping someone off is when you HEAR something and deliberately copy it. This is just a total coincidental thing. Love or hate Coldplay, I think Satch is taking this way too far and is just looking to cash in on this whole thing.

To relate a personal experience, I wrote an into for a song, an arpeggio that went from G major, to A minor, to E minor. Standard fare, really.

Then, about a year later, Kelly Clarkson's stupid-ass song "Since you've been gone" comes out. And now when I try to play MY song, everyone says "that sounds JUST like Kelly Clarkson.."

Totally agree. It's making Satch look like a King Douche.

I don't think it's a rip off ...blantant or otherwise. Having said that, it doesn't matter if it's intentional or not. George Harrison got sued for "My Sweet Lord" sounding like "He's So Fine" and lost. The songs are very similiar but it wasn't an intentional rip off.

Ya, I think you would see the point if they had made a killing off a song/melody YOU wrote!

I don't think it's possible to sue anyone based on the chord progression. If that was the case, half of the blues musicians would now be lawyers...

Actually, some of the books about songwriting encourage such behavior (take a progression that sounds great and write ''your own'' song out of it - I think that's just isn't the way to go)

Melody is a different thing and you can sue someone based on that...

Chord progressions cannot be protected by copyright. However melody and lyrics are.

I think they won a Grammy for that song last night, must really have Satch pissed
