Does anyone really believe that Coldplay were sitting around and were like...let's steal a song from Satch! Would any of them actually even listen to Satch?

Why are you taking the side of the Clear Channel created juggernaut over Satch??? :gethim: :D

CP has no searing solos or huge distorion duh............................. :D

There's an old Rainbow song, i forgot the name of it. But it sounded as if Mr.Big completely lifted the song, changed the lyrics and added the solos, and came up with Addicted To That Rush. I mean, it's a million times more similiar than the Satch/Coldplay debate. I remember my freind played it for me and then i assumed that Addicted To That Rush was just a cover song, but i think the Rainbow song is called something else.

Maybe 70'strathead, Anthony, will know what I'm talking about.

damn i totally forgot about that Danny. "Death Alley Driver" was the Rainbow track...the verse/vocal melody. i think it maybe in the same key too.

They didn't rip him off, at all. And he will lose in court. It's 1 melody, in one intro of a song that is very similar in many other songs. It's almost the same melody as that Santana/Michelle Branch song too.

I agree. It's not a direct ripoff. The verse from the Coldplay song songs like the Chorus of the Satch song. And the Chorus from the Codplay song and verse from the Satch song are completely different.

If artists are going to continue to fire up lawsuits at eachother then strap yourself in. I mean, how many Death Metal songs all sound the same

And if Page and Plant didn't sue Kingdom Clone then nobody else deserves to sue anyone.

Exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've written a chorus or verse, record it as an idea, then 2 weeks later hear something that sounds kind of similar. It happens all the time, anyone who writes music has experienced it.

I would have to agree. I hear the melodic similarity but I get no impression that they ripped him off.....it's such a generic melody. You'd think Satch would be able to come up with something better than that...LOL.

I don't believe that for a second....NOBODY listens to Satch other than a handful of guitar players. On a scale of 1 to 10 of interesting guitar players I'd rate him as a 1. Great player....but BORING.

I think what everyone is forgetting to see is that "similiar" is not "the same".

Huge, HUGE difference.

The melody lines in the Satch and Coldplay song are VERY similar.

But if you break it down, note for note, phrase by phrase, it is 100% not "the same".

Satch's melodies are generally about like elevator music crossed with bubblegum pop. I am not a fan. Still, I hear the similarities.

SNOOZE-FEST. Sorry....I know a lot of guitarists like him but I can't stand that type of playing.

Meh, I don't really care.

Both songs are elevator music anyway.

Dude's sold 10 million+ records. He's not exactly nobody.

I can 100% guarantee you that Coldplay is not listening to Satriani for musical inspiration.

And their common fan base consists of eleven people worldwide :D

It is pretty obvious to me they (Coldplay) ripped off Joe. Check it out here and tell me if I am wrong?

I can`t tell you that you`re wrong, but those chords are used a million times in western pop/rock, and if you`re playing inside the box, like most fairly popular artists, you`re bound to hit the same note as someone else from time to time. Both melodies are nice, but not exactly groundbreaking. Fairly cliche notes put together. :)

I'm not saying he's a nobody I'm saying that nobody really knows who he is or listens to him other than guitar players. In the guitar world of course he's legendary....not to me but it's obvious just from here that he garners a lot of respect.

No, I understand. My point is just that his music is out there. Hell, speaking of the grammies, he's been nominated for a shit-ton of them. So whether you hear his music on tv or in a commercial or movie or at a sporting event or something, his music is out there. You hear him whether you're a guitar player or not, and whether you even know it's him or not. He's not a Guthrie Govan or a Greg Howe or some other really, really obscure guy. So it's not outside of the realm of possibility that they heard and copied the tune (on purpose or not), even if they aren't fans of his. Which I'm sure if they weren't before, they sure aren't now! :D

But copyrights are worthless unless you protect them. There's no point in having protected property if you don't enforce that when you need to. Obviously his lawyers think it's a worthwhile case or else they wouldn't risk the proposition of losing an expensive legal battle.

I don't know Satch obviously, but by all accounts he is a cool guy, very comfortable financially etc., so I don't really see what his motivation would be to pursue this unless he believed it to be a real infringement. If it doesn't go his way, it could end up costing him a lot of money and bad pub.

Out of a circle of family and friends of mine that's near 20. Most of them know and own a Satch CD. They didn't hear about his from me and I'm the only guitarist in the bunch. So sorry, more people than just guitarists know who Satriani is.

That's it. I doubt many guitar players will make a big deal out of this since Gilbert is a God around here. But damm, Blackmore probably fell off his chair when he heard Addicted To That Rush.

And everyone listens to Satch whether theu know it or not. ESPN and Sportscenter play his music all the time. :D Yes, i went to my first Hockey game ever to see the Devils and i laughed when i heard Crowd Chant blasting over the PA. You'll NEVER hear Coldplay played at a sporting event to get the crowd fired up.
