Ok. Short background on this one -- step daughter's first concert. The wife doesn't want her and her boyfriend driving up from Northern VA to MD (DC Belt(HELL)way + 16 yr old/recently licensed driver not a good combo) for this, so she buys a ticket and I then feel obligated to accompany her. Anyway,....we have hurting lawn "seats",...it pretty much rains the entire night. I was miserable until the end -- oh, but what an end (it also helped that I downed a really strong $8.00 Gin and Tonic from one of the Pavillion vendors just prior to this). So, I pull out my digital camera/video device and capture ole John Mayer doing a shirtless cover of VH's Panama.  I fucking couldn't believe what I was hearing/seeing -- he dorked out BIG TIME! Not a bad job,...but, also kinda hilarious. Enjoy, freshly uploaded to Youtube:

OH! BTW -- I had to video the "Jumbotron" because I was so far away from the stage -- came out ok.

Hey Mikey, how's it going?! Oh yeah. I actually like John Mayer,...seems like a really good guy from what I can tell. Not really into his music/songs, but he's a really good guitar player. I like the fact that he seems to pay homage to all the artists/bands that influence him. He covered Tom Petty last night and slipped in some Sting/Police music/lyrics in his own songs. Pretty cool.

Much better than I expected, I'm not a John Mayer fan, but its cool to see some "pop" artists covering that kind of stuff. Thanks for posting that.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about the shirtless thing... anyway, this is further proof to me that Roth's vocals aren't exactly easy to duplicate and I don't mean timbre either. That guy was struggling in the higher lines.

I like the guy. His last Guitar Player interview was very inspiring.

The shirtless thing -- Just before doing the song John says something like (paraphrasing): "For a song like this you gotta take your shirt off". It was obvious that he does it to get all the girlies moist in the seat. That's why I mentioned that,....just thought it was funny.

I was thinking that exact same way as you Bob. The singer had to go falsetto when hitting the high notes that Roth hit back in the day. I don't care what anyone says -- Roth was a fantastic front man with a really good rock and roll voice. Very under-rated as a rock singer IMO.

Ah, gotcha. I thought there might have been more to the shirt thing than that, like an inside joke or something. Then again, Ed usually has his shirt off too, so maybe it was a play on that?

No doubt, I think as a front man Roth gets his due credit but as a singer I think he's often disregarded for some reason. I think the guy had/has some excellent range and I love his timbre. He's obviously not the same singer he used to be, but there are very few from the 70's/80's that still do. Even Dio, who seems to still have it, is a bit weaker than his younger days.

I definitely think taking his shirt off was a play on the VH thing. He even seemed to move around on stage like EVH for a second, no?

I think we'll all be okay. The real trouble starts when I start taking my shirt off on stage and posting YouTube videos of it.

He did "try" to move around like Ed,...but, he looked like a dork doing it IMO.

Thump,....I don't mean this in a gay way what so ever,....but, I'd love to see that.

Hey guys, there will NEVER EVER be a video or even picture of me without my shirt on! Trust me. NEVER EVER NEVER EVER!!!!!

Go ahead and thank me! :)
Thanks bro!

:hys:

They didn't do half bad...I've seen cover bands do MUCH worse! I loved watching the sweater vest bassist doing backups! lol

He looks at home with a PRS. One tool playing on another tool. :D

a semi hollow bodied guitar, crap tone, and some goofy looking finger tapping = FAIL

I'm just not a JM fan since he got to nail Jessica Simpson and I'm jealous  ;) :D

I like the new 'Vaughan/Hendrix Clone" Mayer.
His new DVD is great.

Even he admits to hating the whole "body is a wonderland' thing. But he was smart to do it because it allowed him to do what he does now.
