Gotta love Norum, total gear nerd like the rest of us. Saw this the other day on his FB. He's gone back to an even simpler board. MXR micro chorus, 81 Japan DS-1, MXR echoplex, JH Wah . Dead simple, pick it up anywhere or on ebay for a few hundred bucks (japan DS-1) and the rest is chops.

Are the DS-1 "that" different year to year in Japan? I was thinking of trying out an 84-86 Japan issue because I have always wanted to try one boosting a Marshall and never had. Are these as clutch as the Japanese SD-1 are with Marshalls? Lots of great places to put 200$ though nowadays that's true but I love how he is using such simple stuff and getting those tones with the 2205 or Plexis in the studio.

I had a mij ds-1 and didn’t care for it. The Digitech DF-7 has a bunch of classic distortions with the ds-1 being one of them. That one sounds pretty good. Also have a couple mij sd-1’s bought brand new. Just picked up a newer one to compare, new one is different but still good.

The very first batches of the MIJ DS-1 are very different sounding from the regular MIJ DS-1, and even more from the MIT DS-1.
I have one of these very early ones for 20 years, and during this whole time, I could never find another Boss DS-1 I've liked as much.

He says his is an 81 so that's probably where the mojo is. I'm sure a mid 80's could swap a few parts and get there but I don't think I feel like dropping the cash on that. I have a ton of SD and TS variants already that are kick ass. I have to say that I really like the dunlop mini wah. Really dig the voicing. My xotic barely gets played and it is a great wah in it's own right too. The Dunlop just has this throatiness and girth down.

John Norum has zero forum cred going on tour with a board like that. Just imagine what kind of career he could have had if he only used boutique pedals and amps. He probably could have recorded like 20 albums or something and toured the world for decades. :)

Also, Gary Moore in his early 80's era playing the stock strats used the same era Boss DS-1.

And that looks like a newer MXR Micro Chorus. Couldn't he have created more envy using a vintage Micro Chorus? lolol

Exactly. You nailed it. This guy is a total joke and obviously trying to save every last dime! Hasn't he ever heard of waiting for a KOT for 3 years? Total noob.

Not gonna lie, I have always been a BD/Sd-1 boost guy, would love to have an older DS-1 now to check out

I have a fuzzy memory of a vid interview with Gary where he talks about stepping on the green pedal and maybe that he daisy chained two tube screamers? Of course over the years players change/tweak their rig and there was only so many pedals back then.

Ebay has a bunch of them from Japan. I swear the Japanese have a graveyard of old gear and usually in great shape. Obviously because a lot of it was made there but also because they love to rock n roll. I really respect the Japanese for their love of all that is american.

Definitely a Ds1 in the mid-later 80’s which I think this vid is from judging by the haircut, I bet the tubescreamers were late 70’s, very early 80’s maybe.
