Yeah, I like John Norum a lot even on the Europe stuff, which is the only reason I liked them!!!

fanboy here too...one of my faves.

Also interesting to note that he no longer really shreds like he used to on some of these clips... kind of a shame really. I love his playing now but in my opinion he really leans on the pentatonic stuff where as he used to really rip with a lot more than that. I guess it just doesn't lend itself well to what he does now.

I love his first solo album. The Thin lizzy cover "Wild One" is one of the most soulful rock tune ever. Since he switched to Les Pauls, I think his playing has gotten even better.

I like his tone and playing on the les paul a lot but I think he was much hungrier and fiercer on those fat strats. Listen to that clip above (Eternal Flame) , he just kills it. Yes he sounded like Malmsteen and Sykes at this point and now he is more Shenker / Moore but nonetheless I wish he still played both strats AND Les Pauls. Insane vibrato.

John's vibrato kicksass...did any of you see him on the Don Dokken solo tour years ago with Billy White as the other guitarist? Anybody remember John's wife that played, she passed away 4 or 5 yrs ago .. I think her name was Michelle. She was a female shredder. I remember them touring and doing a bunch of Thin Lizzy covers on back before that. I heard along time ago John sang for Yngwie when they were teens (folk tale maybe). That was of course before Yngwie came over to do Steeler with Ron Keel. Yngwie has played on John's sister's record. Interesting contection.. Vivian Campbell is strongly influenced by Gary Moore like John. I think you can tell by the huge melodic vibrato. Though Vivian has been quit tame himself for the longest time.

John's playing was unbelievable on his first two solo LPs/CDs and on Don Dokken's Up From The Ashes. I never got a chance to see John live and I missed the Don Dokken tour as I was stationed in Hawaii and they never came over there. John has moved to more of a blues based style these days, but I always go back to the first two solo discs and even Another Destination to get my Norum fix.

Michelle Meldrum was from the Detroit area and I actually met her in Detroit at Harpos a few years before she passed. Her band Meldrum was opening for BLS. Real sad as she was around the same age as me.

Favorite Norum tune. Was in my Yngwie phase back then and when I first heard that I thought "this dood can shred like Yngwie AND sing???"

I realize that he didn't sing all of the tunes on Total Control, but he sounded great on the ones he did do.

When he was playing Strats, he had a lot more testosterone ;) His friendship with Yngwie had something to do with it too. and yes, great vibrato.

How about Endica (my favorite off that album)? Back when I was exclusively into instrumentals, this was always near the top of my playlist:

Thats a good one. I prefer "shimmering highs" to that one, but endica is really cool.

I got "face it live" recently and he was on fire!

I have that one too and Norum tears it up!!

Yes, Michelle Meldrum..very sad story. Her and John had a son together. I seen the Don Dokken tour a few times, and Dokken with Norum and Beach. I still have 'Face the Truth" on vinyl.. I agree John's first two solo albums smoke..The thing about John to me..even when he shreded, you could feel every note.
