Just bought a Uberschall. Did I make a mistake?

Hi guys,

I just bought a Bogner Uberschall off a Sneap forum user. I was told in e-mails that it was a Rev. 2 as I was looking for. However after examining photos, it says Rev Blue above the serial number, which is also in symbols, +squaresquare (477). Did I make a mistake? What can you tell me about this amp?

Is a rev blue easy to mod back to rev2 specs?

Thanks all

It is a Rev Blue. The external bias is another tell that it is Rev blue. In comparison to the REV 2 the Rev blue is a bit tighter and a bit brighter. Were as the rev 2 is a darker sounding amp both are killer in my opinion. And I actually preferred the rev blue in a band situation as it cut a bit better in the mix.

Just as I feared, thanks for that.

Is the brighter and tighter nature of the blue a night and day difference from the rev 2 or is it pretty minor? I haven't had the chance to play either yet.

It's not noticeable unless you've played both. Honestly you may end up liking the Rev Blue better. Try it and see!

Hmmmm, I'll give it a shot and see what I do and don't like about it. There are next to no uberschalls in Australia so I guess a blue is better than nothing...

EDIT: How different is the circuitry of the Rev Blue to the Rev 2?

2 obvious options:

a) contact seller and ask for money back in exchange for amp.
b) play it and see if you like it. If not, see (a).

Peace

I don't really have the luxury of that unfortunately. I bought the amp from a person in the US whereas I live in Australia. Fortunately, I have pretty good connections with Michael Ibrahim from MI audio/amplification, and he knows his way around a Uberschall. So hopefully things should be sweet.

Understood.

You didn't, by chance, buy it from a guy whose eBay handle is 'metaunstable' did you?

Just asking, juuuuuuuust asking...

Well, you've got a killer amp there regardless of the Blue versus 2. There's some divisiveness amongst the owners of the two with respect as to why theirs is better LOL, but at the end of the day, it's a killer amp. I'm sure you did your due diligence as to why you wanted one over the other, and it sucks that the one you got wasn't exactly what you ordered. Good news is? They're an easy amp to mod if you know your business. Plug 'er in and give 'er.... Mod to taste.

Keep us posted dude.

Nope, Is there some horror story accompanying that name?

It was from the Sneap forum. I originally posted to advertise my Krank Rev+ but then I saw the ad underneath mine and barely a few hours old.

I love the sound Lasse get's in some of his video's of his Rev 2. I know his isn't exactlyyyyy stock, but kt88's don't seem like anything too extremely difficult.

I'm going to need to replace the power transformer, probably going to go with the MM Uberschall universal one.

No one would happen to have full accurate amp schematics of both the Rev 2 and Blue to compare against, would they?

I personally think you lucked out. I love the Rev Blue. its tight and aggressive yet can sound huge. Amazing amp.

And you got an early run (under 500). Pretty cool!

Well I cancelled at the very last minute and in the process of getting my money back.

The way I see it, if I have to import it here, with all the custom charges and then replace the PT to be compatible, I may as well get the amp that's more in line with my tonal desires.

I guess that means i'm back in the market for a Rev 2! Any Sellers? haha :D

I've never played the blue but am in love with the rev.2

Good thing you were able to cancel, I would've been pretty pissed if I bought an amp that was different than expected.

Not gonna lie, I lost sleep when I found out it was a blue instead of a 2. I know it's not that big of a deal, but it's a lot of money for a broke student.

You could have just called Bogner to ask what the differences are and if they could/would sound similar. I doubt they are that different and certainly not worth losing sleep over. IMHO. Very Happy owner of a Rev Blue here and wouldn't trade it for the world.

This is the basic rundown of the Uberschalls:

Original - Fast gain taper on Gain Channel (some have said almost like an Off/On kind of jump in gain), high plate voltage, good power section compression/sag when pushed, Clean Channel volume slightly lower than Gain Channel by comparison, plastic carry handle (although some Original Uberschalls got the leather handle just prior to transitioning into the Rev2), EL34

Rev2 - Reduced gain taper on Gain Channel (same gain, just more controllable), high plate voltage, good power section compression/sag when pushed, Clean Channel volume slightly lower than Gain Channel by comparison, leather carry handle, EL34

Revision Blue - Same basic gain structure, lower plate voltage, less power section compression/sag when pushed, Clean Channel volume matched closer to Gain Channel, re-design of circuits, addition of Loop volume control, bias test points, power jewel changed to smaller LED type, dedicated design ability to allow power section slaving from an outside source (but this can be accomplished on Original/Rev2 versions), EL34

Twin Jet 1.0 - Gain Channel re-design in a direction towards the Original/Rev2 designs, plate voltage around 530v, less power section compression (due to the design switch to KT88 power tubes), Clean channel re-do in the direction of a high gain modded Marshall tone with very little ability to get a truly clean sound, addition of power section Presence and Depth controls, KT88

Twin Jet 1.1 - The same as 1.0 but with a modded gain taper on the clean channel, same level of gain available as 1.0 with the ability to go lower gain and clean up better
Twin Jet Purple mod – Clean channel becomes more “Marshall” like and the addition of the purple power LED.

Now keep in mind, I made up TJ 1.0/1.1 for the purpose of comparison , I don't think Bogner looks at them that way. Bogner does offer to perform the Clean Channel mod for anybody who owns what I call 1.0 at no charge.

These are the main differences I know about. I don't know specific component values between the different versions from a design stand point, but I can say my descriptions above, for the most part, are right on the money by way of research, comparisons and the general consensus from those who have had time with them. The volume difference between the Clean Channel and Gain Channel on the Original and Rev2 seem to be exaggerated. Yes there is a difference, but nothing that can't be fixed by just turning the Clean Channel Volume control up a little more than the Gain Channel volume control. Another words, adjust the amp with your ears, not your eyes.
