ahh bro it is too much to list man. right now its going through its last major overhaul.

alot more in depth than anything anyone else does for them - FJA and trace for instance.

upgraded filtering, new PT design im working on, MM OT and choke, tons of one-off ideas and changes, front end modifications, phase inverter mods, cap upgrades and brand changes, man the list goes on and on and is over 70 things deep right now and getting deeper each day.

i have a few guys here waiting for clips after its completed. it will be the basis for the 5150 IV prototype which will be a modification called the F*bomb mod that turns 5150 II's into my 5150 IV design

5150's are awsome man. tone wise ive just got a sweet spot for them - they get the job done and do it right

Clips or its a Roland Cube!!!

heres a 1 year old teaser!

and it will sound much better after it is done

I am always scoping out for 5150's myself. I had a few of them.
Wanna get another Block letter one. They really do kick ass and usually you can get them for a decent price.

the 5150 i have has a signature on it. but everything i read says there really is NO difference.

so what's the deal then?

I have done a fair amount of bias mods to 5150s and they sound awesome with that mod. For guys that want to spend the coin, I put in NOS JAN Philips pre tubes (in the gain stages) as well. With those two changes, the amps sound 10x better, IMO.

I have also modded some XXXs to only accept EL34s (just replace all the screen resistors to 5w 1K ohm and hardwire the output tube select switch to EL34) and installed NOS JAN Philips pre tubes in them and they absolutely destroy like that.

PT's are slightly different - they have a different serial number to them, but not all block letters have the first revision PT.

the block letters are more rare because of a lawsuit against peavey from electro harmonix on one of their products, i think it was the voice box? hence the siganture series change.

plus the components are not the same internally. major changes. they were also made better back then IMHO.

Where did you get this info?

what info exactly are you speaking of?

ill PM you, but im not saying it in the forum.

as far as the lawsuits - i cant remember where i heard that from, its been so long. i can hardly remember the lawsuit component that electro harmonix made a big deal out of, but thats the cause and effect.

i owned a 1992 5150 EVH model that i bought broken out of a nashville, TN bar. i purchased it a long time ago, way before van halen got famous again and their tour started.

i have been inside that amplifier and alot of the modifications on my amplifier are based off of it. the serial number dates to early 1992, supposedly only 2 months after the 5150 series was released.

it does not match the schematics, and there are a few caps that are not documented, and the components are much better quality.

my close friend has that amplifier - i gave it to him. how and why is a whole nother story, but i do not regret it at all. good things come to those who give. i do not expect anything in return, except the fact that if he ever has to sell it i get half the cut.

onward with the story, the PT cooked after a bias mod, and when he was searching for replacements - thats when we found out about the PT differences - there is a difference.

where he got the replacement PT, and who he got it from for the amplifier is where ill PM you if you want to know. this person was also a great help in figuring all this out.

the amplifier will be heard on recording in a band called broken altar - releasing in best buy within the next few months.

Shoot me a PM or email. I've worked on a ton of block letters and never seen anything drastically different. The story I always heard about the block letter change was it had something to do with EV speakers.

haha

I have a 5150 that was given to me for free that I disassembled with the same intentions. swap the caps, bias mod, choke, OT etc....

it still sits on my bench in pieces collecting dust almost three years later. I dont even know if i remember how to reassemble it.

i really should just put it back together and have a working amp or sell it...

If you have any questions about putting it back together give me a shout.

FYI, I just confirmed what I already knew, the 5150 never changed and the early block logo amps were the same as the later amps.
