Just De-Tune a 6 String or Go To A 7 String? Opinions!!

Really on the fence about getting a 7 string. For recording purposes, it would be nice to leave the 6 string for everything BUT the super heavy stuff (as opposed to having to use a single guitar for multiple tunings).

So do I just make the leap to a 7 String or just get another 6 string? Anyone find it difficult to switch back and forth between a 6 and 7 string?

Thoughts PLEASE! :D

Good question, as I have been debating this myself...

weird. I was just thinking about this same thing this morning.

I have a schecter 7 string, it's okay, not as good as my old Carvin DC727. but I prefer the feel of a 6 string over all the 7 strings I've had.

Did you just not like the neck width or what?

I picked up a 7 string for the very first time two weekends ago. Granted it was a cheaper model, cant' remember, it DID feel much different then any six string I played. Much more tension or something. I am sure this will vary greatly but I think it would take me a little while to get used to if this is the case. Still, I really dig some of the sounds that come from these guys

I would definitely check out a 7 if you can. It took me awhile to get used to the extra string but now a 7 feels like home to me. Makes a 6 feel kinda small. Are you looking at any in particular?

No not really. My brother in law is selling a Schecter Hellraiser C-7 that is a few years old. Thought about picking it up.

After having a few 7 strings, I've decided that I don't really need them.
If you want to save some $$$.....go this route.

It's big and ugly but does a beautiful job!
I just finished a project back in Dec for Pixar and used it.
Absolutely fabulous results. Didn't need a 7 string and thus sold the one I had.

Works amazingly well and doesn't have the artifact or noise that the Morpheus pedal has.

:)

Interesting. I have the Morpheus and its OK. I also have a regular Whammy. Havent tried the DT.

I recently tried the Tyler Variax, in which you can instantly go to drop D, or Make it a Baritone. Honestly I was pretty impressed with how it sounded in these alt tunings, MUCH better then my old line 6 variax acoustic. If instant alt tunings is what you want, maybe take a look at this, but I do think there is something to the 7, not to mention having one more string to make unique chords and what not

I have been detuning 6s for years and I am sick of it. I went 7 last year and never looked back. Now all my LPCs are back up to standard and gave proper action and feel again after all these years. I am digging it.

This is kind of where I am at. Thanks for the insight!

no way. you picking up a tyler? if so the les paul or the Strat style?

It's going to be a personal choice. I was big on 7's and baritones years ago but have in the last 5 years or so abandoned them and just use heavy strings and tune most of my 6's down to B standard. I really haven't noticed a big problem with intonation that you hear about or sloppiness. They play and feel great to me. That said I have just purchased a project baritone neck and body for an low A and lower axe I'm going to piece together. 7's are cool for a different feel and I don't negate the fact that I could own another in the future, but ultimately I had issues switching live between the two. They do have their place though.......it depends on what you need...

My problem with the variax or using any pitch shifter is that at room volumes you hear the natural tuning acoustically which can conflict with the pitch drop.

I use 7 strings for anything in standard (and use the low b) and six strings for drop D. It took about two weeks for me to get used to the 7 string (I used to always have my thumb wrapped over the top, but that caused me a lot of wrist pain with the wider neck. Now my thumb generally is in the classical position but sneaks over the top for big rock-stah vibrato and bends).

No problems switching back and forth.

Black Les Paul JTV-59. Line 6 asked if I would do some videos using it. :D

Forgot about Baritones.

Personally, I could never in a million years play a Variax or any guitar of the sort.
