Wow! I just got my 'KS' modded JMP 100 watter (BE/HBE/C45) back from Dave's shop after having the SAT switch installed and holy crap, it's added a whole new level to an already killer rock amp! At lower levels it really adds a lot of gain, cuts the volume and tweaks the EQ for a more 'modern' voicing, but when ya open it up with the master vol, it just sounds better and better!

I A/B'd it with a bunch of cabs and guitars yesterday at a local buddies and the amp sounded great with everything we threw at it (with the exception an Ibanez HSH 'S' series axe with really raspy-voiced humbuckers) My buddy, who is a picky/fickle MFer with gtr tones was totally blown away... We tried the BE input first and that was really plenty of gain, even at 12:00 on the gain control. To me, the HBE input with the SAT engaged is just a tad too much gain, so we went back and stayed in BE territory...

I was amazed at how the SAT selection tightened-up when the master was cranked, but still kept the more edgy/modern voicing, more gain and still sounded clean/no mush/no fizz. The lower to medium gained HB pickups sounded the best to my ears; even it the middle Les Paul position you could play rhythm or solo without it blowing up. I was playing blues licks, rockin' rhythm chording, old school metal, heavy palm muting, everything and it handled it all. Even with a ballsy tone like that, I'd just roll off the gtr vol pot and it's clean up just sweet. Tons of dynamics and finger touch/attack to work with like a cranked plaxi playing soft, then digging in, etc.

I already loved and raved about this amp, but now it's even better and I wouldn't have thought that possible! Thanks Dave and crew! You guys really know your shit and deliver! And you guys with the SAT mod were right; it's a great addition to this amp mod!!

Worth the wait indeed.

Nice one

The SAT switch is great - I think there's more than enough gain with that and the BE.

charveldan, when did you send yours in? mine was delivered last september. I ended up buying another Friedman modded amp to tame the G.A.S.

Which amp is yours? thats been to long. Whats your name? I need to do yours next if that is the case.

Thanks Dave, just sent you a PM

Oh, and to the thread starter, I get what you mean about the middle pickup position of a les paul. Lots of amps tend to sound muddy and lack clarity that way, but that's not the case here.

Dave will take care of you! And, yes! The middle PU slot is KILLER and cuts thru great! I always liked J Page's middle tone (and I know he has the thing wired out of phase with push/pull switch) and I can now do that type of thing!

Damn Dude, it took you this long to figure out that mod might be a good idea? You must have dial up.

Wow, he took care of that fast...got my invoice this morning. Can't wait to get it back  Thanks Dave!

So how would you compare the HBE to the BE with SAT? The other Friedman modded amp I have is the BE with a 2 way SAT switch which has two different voicings...the difference appears to be subtle though.

As for the middle pickup position, that's spot on. I've always heard that clarity he seems to have, but I could never get a similar sound unless I plugged into an old Marshall or similar and cranked it way up. I used to think it had more to do with the guitar, but I guess not.

How would I compare the HBE to the BE with SAT on?

Well, the BE + SAT it gains-up pretty nice, and at first sounds super compressed/attenuated/noticeable vol drop UNTIL ya turn up the master more (like Dave explains; there is a volume cut similar to the sat switches on my Cameron Jose - they work in a very similar way - sonically - but are still different sounding) and is just liquid feel and very playable, but still tight with chords, not mushy or tubby due to gain (it really stays pretty tight). Total controlled/harmonic feedback on chords and notes... I think the stiffness in the BE mod keeps the channel tight even with the SAT on when the power section is goosed.

With the BE + SAT + C45 on.... shit... it's now a whole different flavor in the amp: more lows, more aggressive in gain and it sounds wider (yes it sounds 'bigger' in C45 mode), but I had to dial-down the bass a tad (from 1:00 to 9 or 10:00) and that could be my dark/bassy M75 spkr cabs too. My G12-65s were not as dark or boomy.

With the HBE + SAT it was almost over-the-top for me and I had to turn the gain down to like 10:00 or so otherwise it was to distorted for me (I know, a gtr player who says it's TOO distorted!) but it still sounded good, just more aggressive and hairy.

I prefer the BE + SAT with the gain at 1:00 - 2:00, that just flat ripped!!

I like the HBE with the SAT switch on. Great for old Whitesnake riffs. :)

I love the HBE + sat, I run the gain at 9:00 and it kills.

I usually have the gain up around 3:00. :) What pickups do you use? I have a Suhr Aldrich in the bridge.

H3 / SA1 in my TA and a 500T in my LP.

Thanks for explaining, I'll keep all of that in mind

My amp should be leaving on monday, so hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week. It's a '75 Marshall JMP 50 which now has the KS, SAT, FAT, and 6 way high end cut.

I've got a Cameron LG Jose as well - I'm not sure what the features usually were (mine just goes from stock 4-input with a master volume to LG Jose) but there is definitely a noticeable volume difference between the two modes. The volume difference with the SAT switch on the Friedman mod isn't quite as noticeable.

Seriously can't wait to get this amp back. Dave said something about it being very thick sounding...will be interesting to compare it to the other, seeing as that one sounds absolutely massive.
