First of all, I already did a search and also browsed the JVM and Marshall forums. I did find a lot of info but I just wanted to get Rig Talker's thoughts on this particular amp. The only Marshall I have ever had in my entire life is a solid state MG100 so I have no way of knowing what a 'real' Marshall is. I have never played real Marshalls, not even in stores. I do have high end amps like a recto, herbert, and a colossus but I'm wanting some serious Marshall flavors. Mind you I have limited familiarity with what the different Marshall flavors are and that familiarity is only based on internet research, not actual playing. The options I've considered are buying a Ceriatone Yeti/Chupacabra, buying a JVM410H used then trying well-documented mods on it, or wait for the Satch JVM which is the most expensive route. (this means my budget is 2600us max. cheaper the better)

I mainly want this for flexibility in my home/amateur studio in terms of having different amp sounds accessible without going the modelling route (I have those too if I need them). If I can keep it to just one Marshall coping other Marshall sounds that would be best, hence me considering the JVM series.

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm already familiar with most of the downfall of the 410H like excessive noise on red modes, too much gain, too compressed, etc. I'm also wondering if I'm only doubling the effort when I already own a Herbert which 'may' have similar characteristics to the JVM as far as tonality and feel goes.

So what are your thoughts/suggestions?

I just wrote my thoughts on the satriani , if you look on the next few pages should there .
Its Just my opinion on the head , but if you have any questions feel free to ask .

From what you have written the jvm would be ok if it was in a home studio as its got a lot of gain at low levels ,,, the satriani is better for live work in a band IMO .

I would pretty much tell you to go for a Ceriatone Yeti... even though I have a Marshall JVM for a good price. My plan is to just get a basic 900 JCM and mod it out though!

If you however decide to go the JVM route you will have more flexibility with midi, and having 4 different channels, and some with 3 different variations of the channels. Along with the fact that I have read up on the JVM forums and there are some well documented mods that will get you pretty much in the same territory as certain marshall amps you desire.

But... if you desire basic flexibility to get many of the tones with a one channel amp that you would have to tweak on the fly and dont mind doing so, then go for the Yeti... but, bonus if its a studio amp because then you dont have to worry about tweaking on the fly!

Hope that helps... and oh yeah, plug for my amp by the way. I have a JVM 410H that I have made a demo of each channel, and will also bias it before I sell it. Hope you pick wisely however, and IF... you decide to go the 410H route, please give my amp the consideration... $1075 shipped.

Good luck man!!!

I have to ask how close to the border you are from Canadian Land. Because, if by chance you are close, you could get the JVMJS for $1879 + tax here. You could definitely save yourself $600 that route, and if you bring a guitar and unbox the bad boy (and get searched) just claim you were gigging or something and you won't have to claim duties.

Just a thought....

dont claim you were gigging....there's a whole nother employment issue you'll have to deal with.

say you were at band practice, or you were jamming at a buddy's house.

if you need flexibility / channel switching on the fly , the JVM, i owned one for a while, i can only really confirm to some extent what you mentioned, tube swaps can help, as do mods, but there's simply too much gain on OD1 + OD2 in orange/red modes, i guess the Satch model adressed that to some extent but still

otherwise despite only heard/seen demos i'd vote for the Yeti, it's less expensive, you might have to tweak a bit to get the various sounds, but should be rather quick once you get the hang of it (i'm also a big fan of single channel amps i'll add), if it's just for recording as well i'd definitely go that route

and if you do get a Yeti make some video/clips as there's a shortage out there ;)

I played one for 2 years, here is a clip of it live:

I am selling one too :D

That was before I sold you one of those damn Friedmans.

Thanks. I believe I have actually read that. I also read a user review/opinion on HRI which was written up pretty well I thought. The best review I've read has to be Tony M's especially when he compares the regular JVM with the Satch model. I'm not a big Satch fan but I'm even more inclined to go the Satch route just because the feature set on his sig amp 'makes more sense' to me than the regular JVM but the price point is really discouraging.

Regarding buying in Canada, I live in Los angeles so that's a pretty far drive... funny excuses though like "band practice"

Thanks for your replies! I think I'm down to two choices for now: Satch JVM or Ceriatone Yeti/Chup. The reason I eliminated the regular JVM is it 'could have been' a good amp. Even after mods I'm inclined to think that some users still didn't find their sound.

The deciding factor for me now between the Satch and Ceriatone, besides price point, is how bad will I need an amp's features and whether I will use it live a lot.

Yeah, you passed the sickness to me........

So I finally pulled the trigger.

For a Yeti 50 and Klein-ulator!

I really want a JVM for it's features but it's just too pricey for me. I have other channel switchers anyway and I was really looking for that distinctive, classic Marshall tone so I went for the Yeti. I figured if I need to use it live and need different channels I'll just use it with my GSP1101 using the 4CM. I will also order the Klein-ulator to go with it because I do have pedals I'd like to stick in the loop as well. I'll follow this up with a different thread once I get the goods... ;)

The JS sounds awesome to me. Kage and Ralph (Gainfreak) use or used the JVM and say it is a killer amp for home and gigging purposes. I would take their word on it without hesitation.

You will be happy with Ceriatone. I have a Chupacabra 50 and an AFD #35 -- AWESOME!!!!
