On my 2nd kemper but just tried the profiling feature the past couple of weeks. The previous toaster I had almost 2 years ago, I didn't have any issues and got some decent profiles of my DSL.
Yesterday in a studio we attempted to profile a JCM800 2205. To make a long story short, after we got a great tone from the amp and also into the control room, as soon as we introduced the kemper into the signal chain, it seems to amplify the natural high gain noise of the amp (hiss) and also seemed to add some sort of gain and make the tone more brittle/bright. We spent 4 hours trying everything you can imagine from cables, ground issues, RFs, mics, you name it. Updated with video
When we stripped everything down we found that the direct output on the kemper seems to be doing something.
Take the mics out of the question.....When we plug guitar into kemper input, then direct out to amp input, that's when the issue starts. The direct out seems to be doing something. I tried a flash reinitialize, system resets, etc but nothing solved this problem. We didn't get to take any profiles as the sound wasn't good coming out of the cab. We also tried a peavey combo that was laying around and it did the same thing.
Once I got home, I tried it with my DSL...direct out to amp input and it added a bunch of hiss to the amp and the tone got brighter. Any ideas?? I've sent an email to kemper support and am praying I don't need to send this somewhere for service as it's my gig rig and I have gigs coming up in a couple of weeks. I'm going to try to roll back from firmware 2.7.4 to 2.5 today to see if that does anything.
My question now is, should the kpa be adding extra noise or volume or should the sound remain the same as if the kpa wasn't involved in the process? Again, taking mics out of the equation and just going by the sound coming out of the cab/speakers. I tried my DSL on the green channel with a decent amount of gain...without the kpa, the hiss is barely noticeable, when adding it in, the hiss is very prominent.
