More than ten years of dreaming, I finally decided to order a new Ken Lawrence Explorer.
It will be my first one. This KL has a Bubinga top. More pictures coming soon...

Fantastic!

Did you pick any other custom specs? Simple or art work inlays?

Where does one order a KL guitar, and what is their typical price range? I have always been interested but could never find a website for him...

Very nice, i ordered another KL last month and considered bubinga but ended up going with a chechen that i loved. Ken sent me some nice looking tops and im pretty sure this bubinga was in the batch.

Its gonna be a long wait but worth it.

EMG JH set, red fibre optics, titanium saddles and some nice art work inlays (black/gold/white MOP) that will be decided later...

I actually just met with Ken at his shop on Monday and put a deposit down, cool to see others have put deposits down as well!

Wait is going to kill me, but it'll be worth it for sure. Got to see a lot of his work in person (explorers and other new things he's working on).

Mine will be an explorer with a flame maple top (something a little different than the usual Explorers you see coming out of his shop).

I own 2 and have 2 more buns in the oven. There's nothing like a KL. The only guitars I have never had any desire to sell. Take them to the grave.

Way to be a smart ass.. Now show me which one of those sites ACTUALLY allow you to look at different models or see a custom order form... NONE... :lame: :bleh: The "homestead" site is the closest you get but you can't click on any of the links. I've already "liked" the FB page and sent multiple messages without response or info... TRY AGAIN!

PM'd you Ken's contact info. He doesn't really take orders like a cookie cutter shop. He will set out to build 25-30 at a time. Cut all the bodies and necks then start taking orders. Most everything gets presold before this point and custom inlay / finishes agreed upon. Every once in a while, he will have someone change their mind or back out and have something come available during the build process that you can jump on. He really doesn't have to advertise and sell - his work sells itself. It's about a 3 year process, unless you get in on a current build cycle and something comes available. $1500 deposits get you started and if there is custom inlay you have to prepay that. Most of his Explorers, without any inlay will run around $5000-$6000. Best thing to do is email and express interest and see if there is anything in the cycle that's available. Be ready to commit though because it won't last long and he will only offer it once.

They are worth the wait and the cost. Be careful though of all the Chinese fakes now, and there's some turd on eBay building fakes. They are very easy to identify.

Steve

Here's a couple to wet your appetite!

To add to what Steve said, as of this past monday current delivery time for a guitar build from scratch is 2.5 years from this month. He is starting the next batch in January 2014 and is taking deposits for about 25-30 people, 9 of those slots are accounted for at this time. This is if you want to pick out the specific wood, give him additional specs and whatnot.

As steve said, you can get in touch with him to see if someone has backed out and potentially get one quicker if you're not too picky on the specs side of things.

Too much KL content in this thread, too much drooling from my mouth.

KLs are my dream guitars, but I need to get way better to justify such a guitar.

Ken has no need for any more marketing or publicity than he already has. He builds a lot more than people think, and people rarely sell them. Truly among the best of the best.

Progress update. Honduran Rosewood fretboard picked up. Next thing is to decide/design inlay...

Very nice, hope to get one of these built for myself someday!

Colour me jealous my friend. My guitarist has a KL explorer and I have never had the chance to play it because he's a lefty. Great news for you!!

While I would love to own a KL explorer, and will likely buy one eventually, I think a 3 year wait is pretty ridiculous. Even a 1 year wait seems uncalled for.

Take the order, build it, ship it! It does not take a year, especially not 3, to actually "build" a guitar.

When I buy a KL explorer eventually, it will be 2nd hand.

Steve could you please post pics of that singlecut-esque KL you received? I remember seeing the NGD thread but there were only a few pics... would LOVE to see more... if I ever ordered a KL that would be something I would definitely go for...

...has he ever made a lefty?
