Just picked up their 'Gretchen goes to Nebraska' album and am really digging it.

Just curious what album I should check out next and if there are any to stay away from.

If you want the brootalz get Dogman. One of THE best recorded dual recto tones... btw, it's a rackmount recto head. :)

Pete

Dogman, Faith Hope Love, Ear Candy, Mr. Bulbous.....all killer albums.

Actually the only two albums of theirs that I don't love are Black Like Sunday and XV, and even those have a few cool tracks.

Yep, Gretchen is fantastic  I like Out of the Silent Planet, Dogman, Faith, Hope, Love (its a little more "Beatleish" sounding) My fav is the album with no apparent title on it(?) Its got the kid on the floor under the table, crawling through the bread crumbs ;) The whole album is fantastic. Jaw-dropping guitar tones

I agree about Dogman. Faith Hope Love is great, too.

I had no idea that Dogman was a Recto. I have always despised that amp, but I guess a great tone is possible on it after all.

One of the best recorded recto tones ever, mine never got close to that

I'm a huge Kings X's fan got everything they've done...my fav album...Tapehead. I kinda feel it's the best of all things Kings X. Great tones, playing, songs, harmonies...just a fantastic album from start to end.

As for Dogman, I've always stated that is the very best Dual Rect tone ever recorded. And to reference another thread, Ty's guitar had 9's on it for anybody that thinks 9's cannot get huge tone.

I might offend some people here (not my intention), but I'd stay away from Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous & Manic Moonlight. I just can't make myself like those two no matter how hard I try, so I give up.

Gretchen is definitely a good place to start! I love that one. My old cover band used to do "Fall on Me" (at my insistence), and even the audience members who didn't know of King's X would compliment that song after the show.

I would pick up Dogman next. I have to agree with stratotone about the guitar on that recording. It's heavy, and it rocks from start to finish.

Tapehead is killer, and XV has 3 or 4 badass tunes. Earcandy, Out of the Silent Planet, Faith Hope Love, etc.... Everything else is worth it. Get it!

I haven't had any desire to pick up Black Like Sunday. I've sampled some of the tunes, but nothing made me want to listen to it. I haven't checked out the live one's yet either, but they're probably pretty good. I've seen them live 3 times. They're one of the tightest, if not THE tightest live band.

I love Dogman. Killer tones and killer riffs.
I just may give that one another spin later today.

Their Greatest Hits album gives you a good sampling of their pre-1995ish tunes. Tapehead is a great return-to-form album.

I agree with ya...after Tapehead I was very dissapointed in Bulbous. I've got everything since but only because I like the band, met the guys several times, seen them live...so I support them. But yeah, Tapehead was kinda the high water mark for me. In fact the stuff I continue to listen to is Tapehead, Dogman and Earcandy.

Stay away from "Please come home MrBulbous??????" Aw, come-on guys   ....although Fishbowl Man is a little "out there". Yeah, the sound on that CD is a little more sterile - but still great by most comparisons.

It would be absolutely impossible for me to pick a favorite, and don't forget to find some of their solo stuff. Dug and Ty's latest CD's (Strum Sum Up and Come Somewhere) are awesome.

Some of their recent stuff has kinda snuck under the wire, but XV is very good, and I really, really like Black Like Sunday...that whole CD is in Drop C or B - but like King's X, it never sounds like their in the muddy territory.

The only dud in my book is Manic Moonlight. What were they thinking???
Bulby.

:D haha... yeah, when I was writing my comment on this post you immediately came to mind, which is why I added the part about not intending to offend anyone. It seems you're not the only one who likes that one. I just haven't been able to get into it personally. I have to agree with you on the solo stuff. Especially Ty's.

..... and as someone else here who has met them several times stated, they are great guys. Just good people in general, and good to their fans.

Yeah, I've met them a few times...and I can't say enough about some of their solo work. Some of the stuff Dug has done is incredibly catchy and it's a shame it is ignored so much. Ty's newest one has really grown on me. I absolutely love it. His tone is remarkable.

black Like Sunday is by far my favorite King's X album. Gretchen and Dogman come next, but the last two (XV, Ogre Tones) are high up there too. Ty's solo album, Balance, is really sweet too. Love the Egnater stuff on that album.

Thanks for the help and comments guys. I think I will pick up 'Faith, Hope, Love', 'King's X' (self titled), and 'Dogman'. Then I will go from there. Sounds like about all up to and maybe including Mr. Bulbous are worth getting.

My favorites are Out of The Silent Planet, Gretchen, Faith Hope Love, Fourth Album, Dogman plus Tape Head, Ear Candy and just barely Mr. Bulbous. I'll say that even though they are my favorite band... their other albums besides the ones I mentioned are just plain weak. IMHO they haven't put out anything lately that lives up to what they used to do. Sad coming from such a good band.
