Know your Recto!

Ran a Triple Rec in my live rig in line with a 5150 II for about 18 months...Had a real love / hate relationship with that amp. I really enjoyed some of the tones...But not the frustration and constant tweaking. Ended up replacing it with a Mesa Mark III red stripe...That was a superior amp for me in the context of that particular rig. I do sometimes miss the intense size and "blow-back" feel of the Triple when cranked up a bit however...A true "wall of sound" amp for sure.

Been through a few.

Late 90's Rev G Dual Rec
One of the first early 2000 3 channel Dual Rec's
Roadster head
Late 90's Rev G Triple Rec (of my favorites)

and now a Triple Rec multi watt...recorded a quick clip of it tonight just doing some palm muted power chords and yes I boost Recto's they take them well imo.

Sounds realt good to me for heavy stuff. Whenever I play Recto's I never get that tight sound. That Bogner cab probably helps.

Owner of Rev F #1725 here. Best amp I've ever owned. Just an unstoppable indestructible tone monster. It has bounced around cars, vans, trucks, ships, and planes for twenty years (I bought it brand new) and the worst technical hiccup it has ever given me was a scratchy pot. For me the sweet spot is really simple: red to vintage, all EQ and gain at 12 o'clock, clean boost from an OD in front and some time-based stuff in the loop to wetten it up a bit, into a closed-back cab with V30s.

Thanks Danyeo!

It was the Mesa Roadking 2x12 to the left of the Bogner that was used for that clip. In the beginning of the video you can see it miced up.

The Bogner cab does sound good with it but the two 2 GT-75's in it (it's GT-75/V30 x patterned) don't seem to be the best match for it.

I have 2 MC-90's laying around I was thinking of putting in the Bogner to replace the GT-75's.

I have a late 90s blackface 2 channel Triple that just sounds massive. I think about selling it from time to time since I am mostly playing modelers these days, but I can never bring myself to since it is one of the best sounding Rectos I have heard.

I agree that some of them seem kind of flat, and others really seem to have that jump out of the speaker factor....

I tried a Roadster at GC today. It was ontop of an Orange 4x12, so that helped I guess. Anyway, I was able to get tones I liked on all the channels with setting the mid really high and playing with everything else. I also set presence low and turned treble up. I still don't like the modern mode, Vintage is where it was at for me. It had a ton of gain and I can only imagine that it would RIP with a good OD boost. The Brit setting was decent as well. Just don't go in expecting it to sound like a Marshall.

And they had one of those Marshall DSLH amps sitting next to it. What a pile of turd that amp is! Sounds like crap IMHO. If you want to stay brand loyal and play a Marshall because everyone in the 70's did then go ahead, just stay away from that amp.

I have owned many rectos, more then I care to admit, but I have had three rack mounts, one being a revision F the other two Revision G's. I have owned regular 2 channel revision G's and also Recto R0005 (5th made) and out of all them my Road king V1 has stayed. I compared all of them to my road king and it won. The only one I did not get to compare was I had a very early 3 channel dual, it sounded great and I wish I would have kept that one.

The revision G 2 channel rectos were voiced darker for the grunge scene and I think that is why some people love it. I can tell you now you can EQ most any recto to sound like another, they are so close and then in a live setting you would never know the difference.

The road king roadster I owned were ok, and certainly made the amp a lot better from a versatility standpoint, but sheer tone the older two channels beat em, in my opinion.

And I don't think you've heard what your recto can do until you've paired it with the oversize recto cab.

I never jelled with any recto's I played. Much happier with 6505.

One thing about Mesa's- ignore where the knob is pointed and just go with what sounds right. My Mark V had some crazy settings and made a few friends do double takes.

I'd like to play a 2 Channel Dual Rec. I've only played the 3 channel non multi watt and a few single recs. Not the cream of the crop.

^^absolute truth...the settings on mine are nowhere near what I'd consider normal for a high gain amp. Definitely gotta tweak with your ears.

I still am in love with my Dual Recto.
Settings "pretty normal"...but the amp has been Modded by FJA.
When I had it stock.....it was a BITCH to dial in. :aww:
But now it sounds so damn good....doing rock to thrash to Uber metal. :D
Never dabble with cleans.

But after owning all the amps under the sun practically.....I get such a tight rock/metal tone out of this amp...its bliss. ;)

Fantastic amps, but I disagree with cranking ANYTHING on the recto.

Again.....mine is modded...and the highest level I have any setting is noon. Maybe 1:00 on the gain when I want the Brootz.
When it was stock I was really tweaking the settings. Used a OD in front of the amp and that stabalized it quite a bit.
