I've always wanted a Rev1, I liked it's dry articulate tone when I played one back in the day.
Never see them for sale used though around my parts.

An original series Krankenstein popped up recently and I'm thinking of getting it, but the potentially overgained, fizzy aspect of the tone is scaring me off.
I've heard good tones from these amps, but they are always boosted (I won't be boosting) or played with a downtuned axe which evens out the treble/fizz to my ears.
(I play drop D half step down max)

Check out this blog about the Krankenstein internal switch mod.
It makes me really curious now about it's affect on the amp.
Thoughts and opinions are appreciated,

I have a krankenstein and feel without boosting it, it just isn't right.

There really is not much gain without the maxon in front...or at least, it is too round without it.
I run my gain around 830-9 oclock with the maxon full left and right, and get a very pleasing tight thrashy metal tone.
Just remember, turn the Volume up pretty high to start With, and use the Master as your real volume knob, and the tone is really pretty good.

Yeah that's what I'm finding to be true from other users, master volume really high and channel volume to taste.
I just hate boosting and have gotten away from it. I also don't really use that much gain considering the high octane stuff I play. I get by with an EMG 81 and a hard, digging pick attack.

Have you opened up your Kstein and looked at those switches at all?

and...have tried putting a jumper cable in the loop and pulled the f/x boost dial out for more gain and volume?

I know, I know...the K word. LoL
But I think I can make this amp work for me.

Looking for more dirt on this thing from people with more than 8 hours of playtime on one. Including the current going rate for used original series Kstein's.

You have it backwards.
Channel volume up, like to 2 oclock.
Then use Master volume for loudness.
Crack it to like 9:30 to get it rippin.
Refuse to use the boost?
Sell the amp then!

No, I'm right. Master waaay up to get the power section sounding big. The amp sounds small & thin with low master setting. Channel volume (preamp) set low since it doesn't need anymore juice than it already has. That chainsaw ain't in need of any more teeth.

Nope.

Wrong.

Go ahead. Try it.

Channel up

Then get master around 9:30 it starts to make it truly rip.

10 is louder, thicker.

Lots of bite too.

try this

Volume around 2:00
Presence around 2:30-3:00
Sweep 11:00-11:30(to taste, too low and amp is muddy, too high and too shrill)
Bass 11:00
Mids 2:00
Treble 1:30-2:00
Master to around 9:00-11
Gain: no boost around noon/with boost 9:00. Amp has a ton of gain, but somewhat useless after noon.

Cab Mesa 4x12
Boost Maxon OD808.

Oh yeah!

Speaking of the Krankenstein, does anyone know if the Krank website and/or business is still active?I recently picked up a mint Nineteen80 head and have tried to contact them several times the last 10 days or so.Btw,the little 20 watt Krankenstein Jr. seems like a cool jam/bedroom amp.

yup, that's the way I liked it too, master way up and use the ch vol for actual sound level. It's actually in the Krank owners manual to run it that way too.
