Hi guys !! I have been thinking of adding two 6550 outer tubes on my Diezel Herbert but am scared the 6550 will add darker mids or tone to the Herbert just like what i experience on my VHT UL which has 4 EH KT88 and i actually find it dark amd hard to tame unless i crank up more on the masters for more power distortion to blend in for a slight brighter sizzling tone...

Just wonder the dark nature on the KT88 i experienced on my UL is due to the brand EH ? Or its just how KT88 is and will i find 6550 to behave same like the KT88?

6550 is brighter than KT88...and a stiffer tube...
I tried both in my 2204...
I prefered the 6550...

Thanks dude... and how does the 6550 match up on EL34s brightness ?

I had KT88s in my 2008 Herbert and it sounded like ice picks to my ears. I had to get rid of em asap.
It's the first amp i've preferred EL34s to anything else in.

Ι can compare the rft el34 and the tad 6550.
6550 is a brighter tube but not harsher...broader I would say...and surely clener sounding...not as mushy...
It is also bigger and does not have the complexity in the mids...
I do prefer 6550 to the el34...

In the herbert it should be a headroom beast....

Between the two tube types KT88 / 6550
Winged C 6550 in Herbert Rock.

KT88’s no thanks.

Honestly, I prefer EL34BSTR to anything else in Herbert specifically.
Much different than the VH4.

Thanks alot !! I have yet to get El34Bstr on the Herbert... i felt the KT77 on my Herbie didnt have the mids i like... and conversely on my VH4 where i got the TAD El34Bstrs it has much of the mids going....

Finally someone who hears what I hear.

Tried them all,
I prefer JJ 6L6 in the VH4 , GL KT77 a close second.
in Herbert hands down EL34BSTR make the amp come alive , JJ KT77s absolutely choke my MK1 with too much low mid.

Haha... np... anyway i got my Herbert thats an MK2.... its not really a bad amp in my opinion after getting the preamp right with the NOS china tubes in it and it sings !!

Now i have these thoughts on my mind and i have no idea why everytime i see a Diezel Herbert i tend to have a thoughts on whats like on the tone of the MK1 and what are the difference in tone and feel.... and what are the difference off from the first few Diezel Herbert vs Mk1 ?

I did bug Peter asking him whats difference between these and from his recollection he said the first few production of the Diezel Herbert was very tight....

I have a MK2 and if i need another Herbert do i go for MK1 or the early production namely serial off from 001/100 or the new MK3 would be sitting right at my face roaring at me?

6550s are my preference. Not a fan of KT88s in guitar amps. Not a fan of KT77s either. I honestly don't think I like any of the "KT" family of power tubes.

The first 5 or so Herberts made from 001-005 +/- sound really different. Super tight, super stiff. Some said they sounded too sterile, so Peter changed the design. The face plate was also different.

There is not a whole bunch of difference between MK1 and MK2 versions. Mainly on channel 3 and then not huge. MK3 is the tightest... but take with some grains of salt as it still is a Herbert.
