I don't have experience with the deathbucker, but I have a short scale bass that I has an alumitone bass bar in it. I think the bass bar is supposed to be very similar to the tone bar.
Alumitones in general seem to be very polar; people either love 'em or hate 'em. If you're wanting to play blues or classic rock it's probably not for you. If you're looking for something that's great for high gain metal it could be just what you're looking for. I like the bass bar. It can drive my tube preamps into overdrive easier than conventional pickups. It's pretty articulate, punchy, and sensitive to dynamics. Also has nice attack when I use a pick. Best way I can describe it is like an organic active pickup.
One thing to note is you can't judge them based on conventional pickup standards. For instance resistance is really low, like 2-3K. But that's fairly hot for Alumtones. Another thing is that they are dead quiet; at least my bass bar is.
I think it's something you're going to have to get and play in person to get a good read on them. The youtube videos are okay, but really don't seem to do them a lot of justice.
